****WARNING****THIS IS A RANT****

so... I just found out that my last employee in my department was offered a position within the company. From hiring specialist to Wharehouse Manager... I'm VERY VERY happy for him for he has a family and house on a single income.

But I more than pissed off that no one... and I mean no one even bothered talking to me about this. Not that I would say no because I'm not the kind of manager that would hold ANYONE back from moving up... but DAMN, some consideration would have been nice.

So now... Me, Myself and I... the Regional Recruiting Manager have to do all the hiring and paperwork. not only that, but I also do Accounting, Project Administration support for over 20 Time Keepers all over the Gulf States and all the Human Resource stuff for my Division.

My office has a need for 3 full timers... and now it's down to 1... me.

What a crappy day today is

It is a sign of confidence in your abilities. You must be pretty good.

Tell them about this wonderful (fictional) job you got an offer for and you're considering taking it. Then tell them how much work you do there, and how hard it would be to find someone else to do all that for what you get paid.

My 'edit photos' says no; but because there is no "sometimes" option.

Make sure you track the actual number of hours you are working so that you can justify a need for a replacement employee. Then when you've worked long enough alone to get an average for the number of hours per week you're working, ask your boss what is the process for either hiring a new FTE or a contract person. If you're working 45-50+ hours a week to keep up with the workload, tell them you will burn out and the company will be left with no one when you are forced to look elsewhere due to the intolerable working conditions.

Gabby - Thanks

Damon - I work in the Petro Chemical Industry - EVERYONE is replaceable... bad idea

Norma - this one is a bit longer....

I work in a hiring center.. during the summer time I average on about 40-50 hours a week because of the few plant jobs that are open for hire. Between Sept-April however, I work on an average of 75 hours/week. they pay VERY healthy OT... the amount of hours that I work is not the issue, rather the efficiency of my work being the thing. they all know me as the one who can take care of ANY task within 24 hours or less, that word goes all the way up to corporate exec's. I'm in a fairly stable position, IMHO being that I have mastered my job just like any other craftsman working in a plant or this industry. My only superior, the President of the Division, knows about the conditions here.. there is no fooling them... not that I'd try to but they know when I'm busy and when I'm not. I don't really have to report to any about what I do, because they all allready know. If I go to them and say that I'm getting burned out... that would be a sign of weakness and they'll have more barganing power against me. but I'm a fighter nontheless.

Well, it becomes a quality of life issue for you. If you are willing to put in the hours for the extra pay, then go for it as long as you are able to do it.

For me, I'm not willing to put in those kind of hours. I quit a job in November to take one that's close to home so that I wouldn't have to make the daily commute from the Sugarland area to the Galleria. I cut my commute from 30 miles RT to 7 RT. I took a 6% paycut but it's been worth it. And, with the price of gas and the value I place on my time, I think I'm coming out ahead now. LOL

Are the number of hours you quoted as what you normally work back when there was a second person helping you? If so, then you will need to tack on some additional hours if it's just you doing it all.

my commute is a null issue... my office is only about 6 minutes from my house.. to $20 in gas lasts me about 3 weeks.... lucky me, huh?

the hours per person is a constant variable.. I work more than anyone else because of my QC respondsibilities and other tasks...

this department has seen 5 FTE before... now, we hire just as many employees for the field as then, but with less overhead... HR/Hiring is ALL overhead payroll... you just can't avoid it. I handle all payroll for my department as well.. my time, I can get away with charging to a job site so the OT and hours I work doesn't matter to the departments overhead...

are they wanting no OH cost department? maybe... but what a s****y way of getting it done.

oh.. and my quality of life is....meh... whatever kinda thing. I have no kids, i'm getting a divorce (not related to my job) and I rarely go out... mostly out of choice... I'd rather spend my money on photo stuff than other crap.

I've been in this office for 2 years now... logged in about 3800 hours in that time.... I love coming to work at 5am and going home 8pm... I can do it 5,6 days a week..

ROTFLMAO. Think how much you're saving on your electric bills not having to run your AC as much!
