i have been in NYC for the past 4 weeks on a project ... weekly assignment flying back and forth to NYC to work on the weekdays and be home on the weekends

the city is a great place to visit - but i think i enjoy the slow pace of life (texas) more so ... i'm getting a little

anyhow, here is a list of some of the things i have done here (and would like to do) before my nyc work assignment ends:

* go to ground zero and see what it is like
* check out the the empire state building
* in times square you can go into the Marriot Marqui hotel to the very top ... there is a
revolving restaurant that gives you pretty nice views of different points of the city
* you can also try out the famous Rainbow Room restaurant in Times Square
* go to B&H Photo Store
* ride the subway and talk to the locals
* try to make time to go to the ICP (International Center of Photography museum)

find a show you like (David Letterman, Today Show, or whatever) and see if there is a way you can get on it or be part of the taping .... should be pretty fun !!!

i guess since i am sitting in NYC right now i feel like sharing more ...

The original diner that the SEINFELD diner is based on is in New York - somewhere around NYU university ... if you like that show or want to see the diner, you can stop by that place

just be warned, it does not look the same inside as it does on the show ... the show only used the outside sign for the taping ... inside of the diner there are lots of signs and photos of Seinfeld's show ...

unfortunately i did not find the food to be that great ...

My favorite restaurant in NYC, and it is a gorgeous room and fantastic food, is Bouley. It is not for the faint of heart when you get the bill (trust me on that part), but for a wonderful, romantic, memorable meal, it has my vote. He has a less expensive bakery as well - that is probably worth checking out as well.

As for the city, personally, I love just walking around with camera in hand. Your wife may like the biggest shoe department (has it's own zip code) @ Saks. That would be a great trade-off for your trip to B&H - and about the same price tag. :-D

I went to Carmine's in the Theater District and LOVED it. So much food and no way to eat it all. Ended up taking leftovers back to the hotel.

For Bagels, H&H Bagel on 80th and Bway.

For hot dogs, I like Gray's Papaya, just outside the subway station (Red line) at 72nd and Bway. Either or both are easy to do if you also plan on the Museum of Natural History.

My favorite park is Fort Tryon, way up at 190th street on the A train line. The Cloisters are there. It's a really nice little museum/abbey. And there is a wonderful garden that should be in full bloom. Great views of the GW Bridge, too.

The Bronx Zoo can be fun, too.

The other suggestions here have all been good. No-one has mentioned Chinatown. And if you go to Little Italy, you could have some pizza, but you really need a good, full meal.

Angel,

Here's a link to a discount pass you can buy. We're going in July, already bought the pass and have used it as a guide to what we're going to do (because everything in the guide is included in the pass)

I send my sister in law a message. She went to Columbia and got her masters a couple years ago, worked for ESPN and is now in charge of the website for the NBA. Here is her list of places to eat...

Awesome! What dates?

Where will they be staying? Important info b/c there are so many breakfast places/delis/hot dog stands around the city.

If they don't mind traversing the city, here are some suggestions off the top of my head.

A couple great breakfast spots (with relevant links where available):
-- Popover Cafe -- pretty kid-friendly, with homemade popovers and strawberry butter!
-- Bubby's -- homemade french toast, sour cream pancakes! (Also, it's in a popular part of Tribeca, and some famous folks are said to breakfast here, though I've never seen any of them.)

Delis:
-- Downtown: Katz's Deli (205 E. Houston) -- the most famous deli in the city; don't bother going on a Saturday or Sunday. (The website is a pain in the rear, so I didn't link.)
-- Midtown: Stage Deli -- this place is great, but again not on the weekend. Definitely a fun place on Friday or Saturday night as it's crowded with theater types and sometimes semi-famous types.
-- Midtown: Carnegie's Deli -- The best food -- amazing. Weekends are a nightmare. Probably the most authentic place.
-- Upper West Side: Artie's Deli -- Easier to get in, but weekends are always rough in the city.

BTW, I'd suggest your friends count on a shipping budget so they can send stuff home. These delis have such great stuff and they'll want to fill a grocery bag or two -- but then not want to carry it around!!! Almost all of these places have shipping available.

Hot dogs (Kevin's fav):
-- The very best hot dogs in the city are at Nathan's Famous on Coney Island in southernmost Brooklyn. There is a Nathan's Famous at 901 Sixth Ave. (cross street is Broadway). It doesn't have the same character, but hey, it's Nathan's.

-- There's also Gray's Papaya, which is famous for its dogs, but it's also famous for, um, let's say for their less-than-fastidious atmosphere. It's sort of a famed place for cheap eats for poor folks. That said, they have some tasty things on the menu (if you can stomach the rude service). There are three locations: Eighth Ave. & 37th St.; Sixth Ave. & Eighth St.; and Broadway at 72nd St.

Extra note: If they visit the 72nd Street location, there are extra bonuses:
-- Fairway Supermarket on Broadway and 72nd -- a fab grocery story with lots of fun food; also has a bistro on location that's run by a former chef for the governor. Worth a visit!!
-- H & H Bagels at Broadway and 80th -- the very best bagels in town!!!
-- Zabar's -- right across the street from H & H -- the most fun specialty grocery store!! Bring shipping money!! Also, it's always crowded, but just dive in -- it's worth it!

If they have any more questions, let me know. I'll be happy to help!
