Hello Fellow TPF Members,
My wife and I are going to NYC for several days for our 10 Year Anniversary!
I asked my wife what she wanted for our Anniversary and she asked for a trip to NYC. So, like the man I am I put my foot down and said sure anything you want LOVE
We fly out Friday Morning and come back Monday night.
We are staying at the Flatotel
I would like some advice from people who have been there once or more time, that has any scoop on what to do or not to do. (See, Eat and Dance)
I will post pictures later when we get back.....
Thanks,
Angel

WOW ANGEL. That's a huge request without knowing anything about you.
So, all I can say is what I do when I go to NYC.
Eating - There are many ethnic neigborhoods that have restaurants with great food.
Ask at your hotel. I usually stay in Manhattan and go to a few favorite restaurants in Hell's Kitchen area.
Entertainment - You MUST get a ticket for a major Broadway show. At Times Square area there is a facility called TICKETS. You will have to stand in line for a couple of hours, but that is entertainment enough. You can get half price tickets to most shows.( cash only )
There's the New York Philharmonic and the Ballet. There are a zillion local clubs that have great musicians and atmosphere.
If you like museums, there are several world class ones in the city.
Transportation - cabs are expensive. Walking is great if you are up to it.
The subway is the best transportation. Get a multiple day ticket and save a lot.
I like to go to Southstreet Seaport. Take a tour boat around the island. You will learn a lot.
I also recommend a tour bus in the city. You can see a lot of real estate and get a narration as well. There are some that you can get on and off at will.
Statue of Liberty. (overrated)
Central Park - Ok if you like trees in a big city. I go to see the buildings.
Your Hotel is right in the middle of the action. Check out their website and see what's within a few blocks. It looks like that should keep you busy the whole weekend.

I lived in NY for 20 years. If you skipped seeing a Broadway musical, it'd be a sin. I know you are probably thinking bleck - but holy crap...they are sooooooo good in NY. Go to a romantic one like Beauty and the Beast or Phantom of the Opera. They both rock. B&B is a young and fun. Phantom is more intense. When you get tickets - try to get seats on the floor. The musicals are made to be seen from the POV you will have sitting on the floor. I tend to favor the 1st balcony dead center, until I sat on the floor. Holy crap. Perspective on the floor (even in the back) is take-your-breath-away incredible. Most ticket sellers have the seating charts on their site. Totally spring for the floor.
MOMA is awesome if you want to check out some art. You could spend a whole day there.
And don't stare at the skyscrapers when you're walking around. It screams 'mug me.'
Congrats!

if you like asian fusion, try TAO (get a reservation) on 58th next to the 4seasons(get the wasabi filet)... hip and a fun experience. Canal Street is great for photo ops, and take the subway to coney island. Great photo fun there. AND don't miss rockefeller plaza. Here is one I took there back when i had my d5o

These are good suggestions. What wasn't mentioned about Broadway shows is the steep price. Last time I went, I thought our tickets were face value of around $200 per ticket. Even if you get half price, that's still a lot of $$. It's worth it for the experience, but just be aware they are costly. One weekend is not enough time there, so just have fun and know that once you go there, you'll want to go back and see all the stuff you missed. Rhonda and I are talking about taking a trip there later this year. This is the last season for Yankee stadium, so we want to take the little one. Yall have fun!!

checked your hotel location.. you are in a great place to walk to lots things on foot. Tavern On The green in central park is nice, but DON"T eat there. Forgot to mention the cathederal across from rockefeller center(St PAtrick's?). Mickey Mantles' is on 59th at the bottom of central park, fun to sit outside and people watch. McSorley's pub is THE historic beer place, don't miss it. HAVE FUN!!

Thanks everybody for the advice! I know there is so much to do and see and very little time..
Troy, I tried getting tickets or even just a tour pass to Yankee stadium,
but there all SOLD OUT! I will try when we get there.....
Keep the advice coming, I think we should ask Abel to make a Vacation section on the forum.
That way we can all post on what we must see, do and eat at these locations.....
Thanks,
Angel

Head down to Canal Street where they sell all of that counterfeit crap, such as fake Rolex watches and Gucci handbags. I wouldn't buy anything there, but it's fun to look around. You can then check out China Town, and Little Italy. Lots of good authentic food down there. It's an interesting way to spend an afternoon.
Have fun! | | | |

I just saw that New York's Fleet Week is May 21-28. Just to warn you that there will be several thousand Sailors and Marines loose on the streets as well as parades and such. http://www.fleetweek.navy.mil/

I don't know if you would have time but the best thing I have ever done is connect with Big Apple Greeters http://www.bigapplegreeter.org/01-bi...0-what_is.html It will cost you NOTHING. They use people from NYC that want to share their city with you. It is personal, they hook you up with people who have the same interests as you . We spent a windy cold day out with our guide and we were all having so much fun we didn't want it to end. But we let him go home 8 hours later! He wouldn't even let us buy him a cup of coffee!

Of course, all that meat means the prices aren't too nice.

Next time I go to NYC I'm definitely looking for Lombardi's Pizza in Little Italy. Houston Chronicle columnist Ken Hoffman talks about it quite frequently in his column, and I've always been interested to see if it's truly as good as he says.

Best hot dog stand, just about any one on the street. The side deli's are good to get things like huge bagels. I miss the food there so much and Broadway too, but that's about all. I'm not a big city person and I do not miss the winters there. Hope you guys have a great trip!
