I've picked up some great info here :
http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/ (Those people take flashlights as seriously as we do cameras) scroll down to: Flashlight Electronics - Batteries Included. There is some great info in the sticky at the top and throughout the forum. More than most of us want to know.
A few things I have learned, store bought chargers tend to be crappy and hot is bad. If the voltage change that signals charging is complete is missed by the charger, then it just keeps charging and cooking the battery.
Since reading that forum I have a Maha MH-C9000 at the office and a La Crosse Technology BC-900 at home. Both of these charges will test battery capacity and let you know if you have bad ones as well as giving many different charging options.
