Sacrificing the camera - 05-24-2008, 02:54 PM

Well, my dog was due a few months ago for her yearly shots but didnt have money then so we took her today to the mobile vet and found out she is heartworm positive. We have had her on the Heartguard but I guess that was no luck. We dont know how far the heartworm is and we already lost a dog 3 years ago to heartworm. We can take her to our normal clinic but it is $300-$500 for a 3-day stay to "treat" her (but we dont know if that will really "cure" her of it) therefore, we dont have the money for that so I am sacrifcing my camera and may end up selling it for the money. That means...NO MORE PHOTOGRAPHY for me
I have called around to other clinics and the SPCA and they are all about the same price.
I REALLY dont want to sell my camera which means no more business so if anyone knows of any other "solution" please let me know

no our normal vet clinic does not "bill" out our do a payment plan. the only thing that goes through my mind is our dog that passed away 3 years ago of the same thing and i would rather keep this dog that we have now than do photography. this dog is more important to me than that camera.
i wish the best for her too. i am just trying to keep strong because my step son doesn't know and i dont want him to know because it hurt him so much 3 years ago

Hi Teresa,
I sure hope your dog will be okay. I think it's very admirable of you to take such good care of your pet. Maybe a friend can loan you some money?

I wish I had an idea to offer. The only suggestion I have, which won't help now but for the future, is a trip to the library to check out "The Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey. Good luck finding a solution other than selling your camera.

I know the feeling abvout having to give up the camera to do something. I have had to sell my camera a few times to make ends meet, cause we have gotten into a hole a time or to, or cause an unexpected bill came up. Good luck to you and your dog, and start saving up for the next camera!

teresa,

Check around and see if there is a local Humane Society. Houston Humane Society does their procedures for much less than the regular vets. Another option would be contacting Texas A&M.

i can vouch for a&m, and they aren't cheap! a 3 day stay for krumpet with pancreatitis was over $700.

you might look into 'care credit' - my dentist put me on to that the last time i didn't want to have a root canal....(you just dont' want to know...) and i've found a lot of the vets/animal er's take this as well.

How about just sticking it on a credit card and paying it off in 3 months?

those are all great ideas
1) no bank loan or credit for this...they wont do that....called 2 today
2) i dont live near houston and not driving down there to do that.
3) i called SPCA and it is about the same price as my clinic but i can call again monday morning (not sure they are open sundays...but then again may not be either for memorial day) and see if I can talk to someone else and see what they say...or maybe a manager (ha ha...may be a good idea)
4) hubby has 2 credit cards but he is waiting to pay one off from a guy in corsicana (for boat parts he bought him) and that is 3/4 of one credit card and this guy wont tell us when he is going to pay us so we can pay off the card...and the 2nd...well i am not sure what the limit is on that. but that is a good idea

i had a friend tell me her mom's dog got heartworms and they gave her 1 heartguard chewable PLUS 1 vitamin C pill PLUS 1 asprin 2 times a day (morning and night) for 18 months to get rid of the heartworm but the thing with that is....we aren't sure if we have 18 months and i hate to 1) sell my camera and end up doing it for no reason 2) paying the $300-$500 out of pocket for no reason and 3) doing the above concoction for so long and end up not working but i am trying not to think that way.
again those are all considerations and i will talk to hubby more about it as well.

If it's something you really want to do you will come up with a way. Get creative. Put your camera to work for you. Offer a raffle for a pet portrait. Annouce the profits will go for a Doggie in need. You could hold a one day free session with 15 minute settings and try to make profits off the print orders.
Good luck with it all!

Talk to your vet and barter your photographic expertise. You can do a "photograph your pet" day at the clinic. or, provide them with good quality photos of their office, etc.
