Swansons or Banquet or something else ? - 06-01-2008, 08:52 AM

I'm a bachelor. I can cook, but who wants to spend the time and then eat by yourself ?
In order to get any semblance of a balanced meal, I take the path of least resistance and make a TV dinner.
For those who really know their stuff, my question is simple. Do you prefer Banquet, Swanson, or something else ?

It's this sort of question that keeps my post count higher than it needs to be....

I know how tough it is to cook good food for one person, but....

The doctor in me wants to say that 'tv dinners' are so processed that I have a hard time seeing even a semblence of a 'balanced' meal--they have so little nutritive value despite what the box says. Not to mention the all the chemical preservatives and flavor additives.

If I might make a suggestion--check the 'organic' section for a brand called Amy's Kitchen. They sell ready made meals (frozen and canned both) that are made from good whole foods. Add that to bit of organic ready made salad mix and you'll be doing yourself a BIG favor. You'd probably be surprised how much better you'd feel after just a couple weeks.

[/doctor]

There's several places in the Houston area that specialize in partialy prepared take home meals. Most of the prep is done, you just pop it in the oven or on the stove. I'm sure there's similar places in Ft. Worth.

I haven't had a "normal" frozen meal in so long, I couldn't tell you which brand is better anymore. When I eat frozen, it's typically Lean Cuisine or South Beach. But when I can find it, Kashi makes a great sweet-n-sour chicken meal, and it's not loaded with crap.

There's always a fine platter of "Redneck Squid" to be had if you'll just take the time for proper preparation... It doesn't take long to whip it up... It's not very healthy though

Some Marie Callender's are good. Then there's Healthy Choice, but I'm into healthfulness anyway so it's usually my choice of pre-prepared meals. Or South Beach when I can find it.

What's wrong with taking a couple of hours on a Sunday (or Saturday or any other day), preparing several larger meals, packaging them up in appropriate serving sizes, freezing them, and then using them during the week?

We used to do this pre-kids and it worked out well.

This evening's meal was

Grilled Yellow-fin tuna steak
Grilled Yellow Squash
Broccoli (raw)

Took about 20 minutes and there is nothing left... Lots better than the "pre-fab" stuff.
