Five tips to ensure the TSA doesn't steal your stuff - 06-01-2008, 05:29 PM

Taking. Something. Always.
That's what TSA means to airline passengers like Edward Fleiss, a sales manager from Huntington, N.Y. When screeners inspected his wife's carry-on bag at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport recently, he claims her designer eyeglasses were swiped.

Five tips to ensure the TSA doesn't steal your stuff (full story here applies to checked bags as well)

I always put small colored zip ties on any bag going through the checked bag process. I bought a set of about 5 different neon colors, small sized and easy to break, but if I put a green and a yellow on, while they are easy to break open after the TSA lock has been opened, I at least KNOW someone opened it. Odds are pretty small that someone will have the exact color combo of ties in their bag. And I point it out to the screeners at the front fwiw.

While it won't prevent it from happening, I know instantly that my bag(s) have been opened by someone....

Those 5 tips are good tips. I work in law enforcement at the airport in OKC and we get a call a week or so on missing items from checked bags. In fact, just this week we had a lady fly in from Houston Hobby and she was missing some expensive jewerly in her checked bag.

You have to wonder though how many claims are made when there was nothing taken or damaged. Probably the same people who would expect to get a $1209 lens that's mistakenly advertised for $209 would make a $1209 claim against TSA even if they didn't ever own the lens.
