This is a fuzzy childhood memory, but tops anything donutwise I've eaten in the last 25 years:

Paul's Bakery, Fredericksburg, Virginia: jelly-filled donut holes. Best. In. The. Universe. Follow it up with one of the early purveyors of frozen custard in the same town (my hometown), Carl's, and you'll be in Sugar Shock Heaven for months.

In my not so humble opinion, small family owned bakeries always trump chain bakeries when they are available, but a donut that is 250 miles away will never be better than one that you have in your hand at the time...

That being said, the greatest pastry known to man kind (both for it's taste, as well as the life affirming toll that it will take on your body) is the apple fritter from The Slaton Bakery.
