Mass Destruction of Canon Equipment

I can relate...a summer job had me in "the Hell Hole" at a cadillac dealer (1970s) for a few hours one day. All of the warranty replaced parts were stored there and once every so often the guy from GM came to verify destruction. As the summer hire, I got drafted and handed a sledge hammer.

My job was to find the part (via toe tag) as the number was called out. I found the part, pulled the tag and handed it to the guy, and then a few whacks. Nothing quite as special as a lens, but there were a lot of very expensive stereos I busted up that day. The defect may have been a simple as a scratch on the dial.....replaced under warranty, and to be destroyed. All sorts of other parts were a bit harder to "destroy", like brake rotors and such. A few well placed blows bent or dented it enough to satisfy "The Man". Some parts were destroyed in a vise or by having a hole drilled in it.

Of course, as the grunt, I only got to man the sledge hammer......and bashed all the stereos.

I could incite a riot by saying something like, "Well, its only Canon", but that just isn't fair. But I sure understand any company's dilema in this situation! PCS's old Recap machines used to transmit pharmacy claims had to be collected and destroyed because of Protected Health Information in memory for the last 10 transactions they ever transmitted...even if they were 20 years old (and older).

Sure, Canon says they were damaged during delivery but we all know the truth!

Back in the early 80's, I bid on the destruction of PC's coming out of a major corporation. Everything had to be destroyed, nothing could be salvaged. We were going to smash everything in a car crusher.

Kind of glad I didn't get the bid.

What's even more disturbing is you know you could remove the word Canon and put in almost any other word whether photography related or not and it would still apply.
