Our first stop is El Mercado and Mi Tierra restaurant. The shops are nice to visit also.
The missions are nice, and there is an old neighborhood that has homes on tour, but I can't remember the name.
Don't miss the zoo, and there is also the Witte museum and a small Texas Ranger museum on Broadway.

Broadway is a good street to stick with, it has the McNay nearby, the Witte, Botanical gardens, zoo, cool restaurants and shops, and old style houses / architecture. As mentioned, you can visit the missions, but that might not be so kid friendly, unless your kids are into old buildings (I wasn't). There are some neat things to do outside of town, like cavern tours and such.

If you have kids ---- it is a ' must do ' to go to the Ft. Sam Houston Quadrangle. It is an old historic building complex that has a huge courtyard, probably 2-3 acres at least that houses tame deer, peacocks, ducks and sometimes bunnies. They ask that you don't feed the animals and I would refrain from doing so. Ample parking is nearby and plenty of benches and shade once you are inside the complex. Geronimo tower and other modern day battlefield items to see also.
Being that Ft. Sam is a military base., you will be required to stop and show drivers license and reason for being on base (used to be an 'open base' before 9-11) they will give you a pass for your window, and they will gladly give you directions to the quadrangle which should be easy.
You might want to google a map of Ft. Sam so that you can have it handy drive around the base once you are there.
Beautiful base to see. Best of all --- it is free ---- and it is a very easy drive from downtown.
