Gay Couple sues Photographer

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - The New Mexico Human Rights Commission says an Albuquerque photographer discriminated against a gay couple by refusing to photograph their commitment ceremony.

The photographer contends the ruling violates her right to freedom of religion.

Vanessa Willock filed a complaint with the commission in 2006, saying photographer Elaine Huguenin told her she photographed only traditional marriages.

The commission says Elane Photography violated the state Human Rights Act by discriminating against Willock on the basis of sexual orientation.

It ordered the business to pay $6,637 for Willock’s attorney’s fees and costs.

The Alliance Defense Fund plans to appeal. The group handles legal cases aimed at defending the Bible.

I can see this ...

I refused to do a nudist colony wedding in Az years ago.
I really did not care if they were nude nor the guests
but did not want to be nude to shoot them.
They claimed their rights were violated also.

It was film days and I needed pockets ... lol !

Exactly what Ben said. Both parties here probably had something to prove...both parties pushed issues in the other's face. Gay and religon. Unfortunately in business, you need to be a little more "politically correct" or you will face this.

A correct answer would have been, I am so sorry but we are booked that day!

Or even more simply put, "Sorry, I can't". As Ben said as business owners there is no law that requires us to say why we can't do something.

We see advertisers all the time (or at least used to) that say they have a right to refuse certain types of advertisments that they don't want.

Traditional weddings, Indian Weddings... they are all different, and there for I ONLY shoot TRADITIONAL WEDDINGS for the mere fact that I am not Familiar with others and I want to ensure that you are 110% satisfied. with the images I provide!

The funny thing is, I still haven't been able to find this story on the ap. You can find all sorts of blogs that have this exact cut and paste on it, but no where can I find an actual AP article. This just seems too strange to me.
