Our AC just went out at the house yesterday morning. I tried to get some one out to check things over on Wed but they wanted 200 dollars to come after hours. So we waited it out. I had to fight the dog for a spot in front of the fan on the floor because the bed is too damn hot. things got nice about 3 am and I could finally move back to the bed.
Now I am in holding waiting for the guy to come out this after noon. hopefully he can fix it. I have a bad feeling we are in for another hot night.
I sure have gotten spoiled over the years. I can remember not having AC and it was not an issue. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

I remember no A/C too but I was a kid and wanted to be outside all the time anyway. Good luck on the A/C. Hopefully it will be something simple.

At least your area cools a bit at night.
ours bought the farm a few weeks ago. it was not simple. It was an entire new unit, the old one was 23 years old(!)
so....$6,000 later.....

went out... ?
does it still turn on and blow air...
or is it just not blowing at all?
the reason I ask is cause ours just did the same thing and it thank goodness was just frozen over... and there was something in the outside unit was dirty so they cleaned it out and defrosted it... now we are MAKING ICE CREAM...
good luck!!! hope it is SOMETHING simple!

I don't remember a time before central A/C. I don't know how you guys did it.
I remember one time one of my old coworkers told me when he was little they used to put a block of ice in front of the fan to cool the air. I thought he was joking. He wasn't.
I don't see how you people grew up without central air, cell phones, and ipods.
I would die. | | | |

The old attic fan. Pull your bed right up to the screened windows. Shove some paper in the tear in the screen, to keep skeeters out. Nothing like a 90° breeze wafting across your face at night, with humidity to match. Ahhh! Life in a convection oven. Gotta luvit!

I would die. | Lots and lots of Double hung windows, open top and bottom. Big breezy front porches. Fans. Lots of lemonade.... and $15 electric bills!!!!!
And...and most important...we never ever had any A/C, so we didn't know what we were missing!

The house my wife and I rented didn't have AC after we were first married. We'd spray a mist of water on the sheets before we'd lay down. Have a gentle breeze from the fan blowing over us. And you know what, it was hot...a lot. If I'd wake up at night I'd take a cool shower and lay down again, not completely dried. But when you take 3 or 4 showers a night, getting an AC for the window was cheaper than the water.

swamp coolers. aka evaporative coolers
A large blower that sucks air thru a moist filter material. The air is cooled by evaporation, and the blowing air can feel darn cool.
Work best in dry climates, so they aren't real popular in SE Texas (...darn...). But my grandparents had one in south Texas forever. Like standing in front of an open freezer.

I don't see how people did it. I mean central air wasn't common until the 60's. Can you imagine working in NY in the summer in your suit and hat?

What does AC stand for?
Sleep with out AC for a couple fo weeks and you get used to it. Makes the heat during the day easy to deal with.

Remember back in the years before A/C was common in the retail stores, most of the stores had slow turning Hunter Original fans located on the foyer ceiling just outside of the entry doors.
Ever wonder why those fans were there? To keep the flies from coming into the stores when the doors were propped open for ventilation. Don't you miss those good ole days?

I lived without central A/C until five years ago when I moved to the US. It means if one AC in your house go off, you can always move to another room where it is one working!!! Plus we didn't have to cool down all the house, only the places where will be at. Aren't there any portable AC units?? something that can help you while the central unit is out of service.

My grandparents had them up in Van Alstyne, north of Dallas. Those suckers were twice the size of a washing machine. Blow? Those things could BLOW! ICE! Always made me sad we couldn't have them here.
I think we got our first window units when I started high school, in '64. First car ac was a '61 Ford Galaxie 500.
We bought window units, when we got married. When my wife was pregnant, my mother decided her grandchild would not sweat or shiver, so she put in a central unit for us. The silence, without the window units, was deafening. We had to by a fan for noise. We've slept with a fan noise for 40 years. I don't know how people sleep in silence.

good luck!!! hope it is SOMETHING simple! | went out. they had to change a part and said it should work for a while. so hopefully if the coil holds we will make it through the summer and into the fall and some lower rebates for a new AC.. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
