I would think a bigger area. The photographer could always just sector off the space he will actually use. no?

it truthfully depends on what your are shooting

an 11x14 room will give you plenty ofspace to do headshots and waste up shots with a 28-105mm lens, however as most people know a fexed lens is better to shoot with (if you need to know why please ask) but for a 50mm fixed lens, you will need a lot more space than 11x14 to do full body shots. and unfortunately 80mm is more or less industry standard for model shoots. 50, 80, 105 150 and 300 depending on what you are doing specifically. and obviously the higher the mm the more space you need!

most backgrounds and backdrops are at least 10 ft wide so that would be kinda narrow. I would say at least 10X15. Is your family still working on the studio and are you being limited by size?

Bigger is definitely better, within reason at least. It's not just a matter of having enough working distance for a given focal length. Depending on the shot you may also need to put some distance between the subject and the background. Also, a bigger area will allow you to have more control of the light because in close quarters you're a lot more likely to have reflect light off the walls/ceiling. Speaking a ceilings, higher is better too because you often need to position large light sources above eye level which for a standing subject would be pretty difficult with 8-foot ceilings.

I would think 10x10 is too small, 10x15 might be OK for head and shoulder shots but will still be a bit cramped.

Great news. I've never done studio work, but I've been wanting to. This may be a good way to learn.

As for a name...hmmm...Tinkerbell's Magical Light Studio!
