Thank you | As long as no white light is visible to the rear. The red light also has to be visible from x feet in the day and y feet at night. Its in the transportation code somewhere.
So, yes, if its done right.

you can drive with it however it will not pass inspection and you can be ticketed if they decide to do a "rolling inspection" (where the trooper does it on the side of the road) usually, they won't bother you unless you are doing something stupid (i was a state inspector in a former life)

I lived in New York State for years. If you had a taillight out, broken lens, cracked windshield, or anything like that, you were pulled over and issued a citation. Generally if you proved to the judge you got it fixed, they would dismiss the fine.
Here in Texas, I see every other car with a windshield that you can barely see out of, broken headlights, tail lights, belching smoke. I don't think law enforcement will stop you with red tape on your tail lights.

Use the red tape, carry the paper that shows you have a new lens coming in.
(P.S. Wonder if a junk yard would be faster and cheaper? I had a headlight disappear, yep, just disappear from my Pontiac Transport and it was over $120 as I recall to replace.)

Had a buddy once with a 71 charger, tail light lenses were busted and he couldn't afford new ones. He bought red plastic cups (the see through kind) and shoved them into the spot in the back bumper and never had a problem

LOL, 1971 and I was junior in HS, my Honda 175 had some red plastic wrapper but they pulled me anyway. That was back in the days when you sat in their car for 30 minutes until your info came back. Thing is tickets were cheaper too, I think it was ten bucks for that one.

be thankful you don't drive a semi, we get stopped for no reason just so they can look us over and find something wrong. Did you know there is a specification for how low your mudflaps have to come down?

when my old truck was wrecked my husband taped it with clear packaging tape and colored it red and the underneath part for the blinker he colored it orange with sharpies and we drove it like that until we replaced the truck bed a week later.

LOL, I survived a trip to Hutchins yesterday.
Now I have new one installed and am relieved not to have been fined.
John I am glad I dont drive a truck, I know myself and that would be a bad thing.
I do share your diesel pain, abeit limited pain but I share.
Cecilia I'm happy you survived, it could have put you in the poor house if tagged.
