Port Aransas - 06-29-2008, 09:23 PM

Looking for ideas suggestions on what I can do when I am in Port Aransas in August.

My wife and I are getting away from the kids for a week... and I've rented a 500mm f4 IS

What we got on the list so far is the
  • Sunset/dolphin viewing cruise
  • St Joeseph's Island
  • Beach sunrise / Sunset
  • Moonrise / Moonset
  • Movie

What else should I do/see? Thanks in advance.

There's a great bird sanctuary there - on the bay side of the island just south of the ferry landing - super cool. Don't know how busy it is in August though.

Geez, when you're not taking pix of wildlife, pier, wind surfers, tourists, etc, I'd like to give recommendations for my two favorite restaurants. Shell's and Venetian Hot Plate. After a morning of shooting you can always stop by Shorty's for a cold one. Or maybe stop by Fins for a burger or fish sandwich and a beer. Be sure to have your camera with you for some good boat pix from Fins' deck.
Now if you really want to put that long lens to use, drive down to Padre on to the beach between and Bob Hall Pier and the Holiday Inn Sunspree Hotel and capture some au naturel shots.

I got my photos online of my vacation... and rental of the 500mm f4 IS - freaking sweet lens... I cried to mail it back.

FYI... the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge *ROCKED*... there were soooo many animals out... and since it's out of your way to get there - there's not alot of traffic.

Lucky guy, those are some great pics...the morning shot with the deer is smooth.
Thanks for sharing. That lense sure had some nice effects.

Sunset cruise will take you right by Lydia Ann Lighthouse. Awesome shots and quit romantic too. Also if you have time drive over to Rockport. Plenty to shoot over here.. Smith House, Goose Island State Park, Rockport or Fulton Harbor etc.

Yep... did the cruise... and during a rainy day the wife and drove to Rockport and drove around their "beach" shooting birds... the seagull w/ a raindrop is from that day.

We went from the "beach" to Rockport's mega theater... and saw the new Star Wars movie.... when we got out... the sun was shining... so we went to Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.

Ah... to be kid-less (our kids were with grandparents)... Neither of us wanted to come back from vacation.
