Maintenance got into my apartment when no one's home! - 06-30-2008, 06:08 PM

I left my apartment this morning to run some errands. When I got home, I saw a "service ticket" issued by the maintenance guy and a pair of mailbox keys were sitting on my dining table.
THE MAINTENANCE OPENED THE DOOR AND GOT INTO MY APARTMENT WHEN NO ONE WAS HOME/THE OFFICE DID NOT NOTIFY ME THEY ARE GOING TO DO SO!

Most importantly, NO ONE requested those keys. Not me, NOT my hubby. I called the leasing office and told them about it. The manager asked for my apt #, and said that the keys might meant for # xxx W, and I am in #xxx E The maintenance might have delievered the key to the wrong apt. but HELLO!!! It's NOT my mistake and it SURE is NOT my problem! So,the manager said she would check on the issue and called me back. A few minutes later, she called me back and told me" We found a note in your file that either you or your husband requested the keys. Your husband might be the one who requested it, it's just that you didn't know about it."
I am pretty sure my husband did not ask for those extra keys since we already have TWO sets of keys.
I hang up the phone, I just didn't want to waste my breath and energy arguing with them. I am just so P/O that they got into my apartment just like that. It's ridiculous!
Are they even allow to do so?!

Legally they can. Especially when they left you the service ticket.

In addition, they made a mistake on the apt number to drop off the keys.

I wouldn't sweat it. :)

I had worse experience with Apartments.

I have had that happen to me too Suki... except for I was in the shower and came out of my room in a towel to find someone in my kitchen.... I had NO idea they were coming!

Downside of living in an apartment... Sorry that happened to you!

I used to key in to apts all the time when doing repairs and such. It always felt strange to be in some ones apt when no one was there.

Am I missing something?

Sounds like you just needed a reason to be upset! If that is the worst you have to get upset about, I am jealous.

Check your contract, I would be very suprised if they do not have cya built in.
I've never heard of renters not having the authority to go in.

I thought this was normal? Usually we get a notice, if there's an exterminator going to be there on x day, but sometimes if we ask for a repair or something, 9 times out of 10 they do it while we're at work.

If they just went into your apt. for no reason, I can see why you'd be upset. But they thought you'd requested something, and made a mistake. They left a service ticket, so they weren't being sneaky about it.

yeah, unfortunately they can! Isn't that horrible?
I had a bad SCARY experience when we lived in an apartment in Texas City!
Maintenance came knocking on our door, and I didn't hear them because I was taking a nap in the bedroom..........they walked in to do something with the fire alarms, and I wake up to hearing someone say, "oh, im so sorry!" Front office calls me 3 minutes later to apologize.......
Partly my fault, I should have locked that top lock and security chain........

Wow, I didn't know they can do that, guess I was making a big fuss, I just felt "invaded".....I lived in several different apartment complex, but this was the first time such thing happened to me. I can understand if it was for the maintenance, plumbing, or whatever needed to be fixed.
For mailbox keys? I thought they could have simply left me a note to notify me to pick them up in the office.( Even though I did not ask for it.)
And Jeff, yea, at least for TODAY, that was the only thing that made me mad..jealous?
Oh well, I just wanted to vent.
Thanks for listening!
I am gonna go read the contract now!

I feel your angst. It's always disturbing when someone comes into your house even if they give you prior notice (which is required unless it is an emergency, or you have requested repairs, etc.) They are supposed to leave the notice that they left.
I wish my bumb A$$ landlord was aware of the "rules" but he is an idiot and wouldn't understand anyway.

If it was a mistake on a work ticket there isn't much you can do. They are human. However in the state of Texas (this is from the million of rental contracts I seem to have had over the last few years) they can not enter your apartment without notifying you ahead of time unless it is an emergency. Of course, sounds to me like human error. Happens to the best of us.
