Is there a virus going around that... - 07-01-2008, 01:36 PM

screws with your mouse? Sounds weird, but I swear I want to throw this thing threw the wall. I've changed mice and reinstalled the drivers and I have the same problem and it seems like its getting worse. There is no pattern to what its doing. Sometimes it triple clicks, sometimes it wont click, wont highlight, no cut and paste...and then best of all - sometimes the cursor moves and it clicks - which seriously messes with me trying to edit photos. Any suggestions? Help!

Holly, is it a wireless mouse? I've been having similar issues (tho not quite as bad as yours) and my husband finally figured out that we have 4 things in the office that all run on the same frequency. He only figured it out cause we would both have mouse issues at the exact same time, and we both have the wireless mice. Hope you figure it out soon, I know how frustrating it can be.

If it's wireless, have you changed the batteries? Weak batteries will make it erratic.

OK, I currently have on it a GE Dual Scroll Optical Mouse. I changed it out with another generic mouse to make sure the mouse wasnt broken. Unless I plugged in 3 bad mouses, its something else. And it doesnt have batteries. Any more ideas?

My guess is other usb devices that are messing with your mouse driver. Try unplug others but the mouse...

I don't have any advice for you, except I had the exact same problem on my other laptop. It didn't matter if I used an external mouse or the touch pad and it was TERRIBLY frustrating. If you come up with a solution, let me know!

It is possible that the mouse click is set to single-click in the computer profile. I had lots of those type problems with my laptop until I changed back to the default double-click. Every time I would get the cursor near an icon it would open up, sometimes with out any click at all.

Ugh. After 60+ mins of editing 2 images - that should have taken 10 mins total...I am back to giving up. I tried pulling the mouse out of the hub it was in and putting it directly into the USB port on the computer. Nothing. It is acting like a dead battery wireless mouse problem. Its messing with everything from clicking to scrolling to moving the cursor. Im gonna kill it. I was hoping it was a virus. Hoping. Hows that for irony. Not sure what else to try besides kicking it or threatening to feed it to a cat. ARGH!

I haven't used a mouse in years, I use a trackball. But when I did, I remember that they could pick up cat hair and the like, and get so dirty that it wouldn't work correctly. I would pop the little ball out of the bottom, and find the little wheels full of hair and dirt. Can you clean your mouse?

Holly, just for grins and because it doesn't seem to be hardware have your run a virus scan (with current definitions) and a spyware scan? I have seen some pretty funky things happen that appear to be hardware that weren't.

Run a check for spyware/malware. I've had this happen once before. If you've used three different mice, then it does sound like someone else is messing with your system. BTW, I'm assuming that you're running a Windows based system. FWIW, Windows Defender from Microsoft is good (and free) as is Spybot (free also) for dealing with spyware/malware.

Also, make sure your antivirus is up to date and run a full scan.

Yep, rebooted lots of times. An optical mouse doesnt have a ball, does it?

I ran virus software and it found a worm. Can a worm do this?

The worm was removed and its still acting nuts.

Oh, yes! Are your definitions up to date? If not, update them and rescan. If they are, find another virus application (there are several free ones and some recommended on TPF) and then scan again. Not all programs find all viruses.

This is a spyware issue. I have seen this and it is a pain to fix. Let me see if i can find some information in my vast library in my head and I'll try and post it back. The first thought I have is try windows defender you can download it from Microsoft.

Thanks...
