Need advice...I Pod transfering - 07-02-2008, 11:57 AM

Ok I-Pod people. I am in need of some advice to help a 14 year old niece out. She recieved a new laptop a day or two ago and wants to sync her I-Pod on the new laptop.

Problem is, it wants to erase the I-Pod and start over cause the I-Pod is synced with another computer. If she deactivates the other computer, then her Mom won't have access to the music.

What is the best way for her to sync her I-Pod to the new laptop and keep all the music on it?

(I have an I-Pod, just have never had to move it from one computer to another.)

Thanks,
CJ

I recently had no problem moving a 1st gen nano from computer to other computer.
Well, unless it was formatted on a Mac and I connect to a PC then it wants you to start over. Found out it has to be formatted on a PC to use on both machines. TMI

What i-pod it it?
If they have a itunes account you could try authorizing iTunes on the labtop, but i am not sure if this will accomplish anything.

Aslo find out from moms machine if the Ipod has the latest patch. If it is way out of date this could be the reason why it's asking for a restore.

Thanks Osy,

I will look at that tonight when I try to get it transfered. Any other suggestions?

first thing you need to do is authorize the new machine with the account. You can have up to 5 machines authorized per account.

Once she's done that there is an option to transfer all purchases on the ipod to the new computer. The other option is to perform a backup from the old machine. This will burn cd's with anything that she has under her account. Then she can install the backup on the new machine.

We've done this at home a couple of times for iPhones and iPods.

edit: now that I'm home and have access to itunes, here's what you do

1: open iTunes
2: sign into iTunes account
3: authorize new computer
4: plug in iPod device
5: go to File>transfer purchases from "insert name of device here"
6: sit back and relax while any content previously purchased through iTunes and currently loaded on device is transferred.
7: if there's more content on an older PC that needs to be moved you can simply synch up what needs to be and repeat the transfer process.

alternatively you can

1: open iTunes
2: File>Back up to disc
3: insert copied discs in new PC and let it automatically import just as if you were importing from a regular CD.

Hope that helps.

I've done it a couple times by networking the two computers together and just finding the folder when itunes keeps the library and the music. I just take the whole folder and put it in the same place on the new computer. So the ipod thinks it's the same computer.

Hi CJ,

Im gonna make a suggestion like Tom, and just back up all the music to a portable hard drive or any storage device and put all the music on the new computer.

Thanks everyone. I haven't tried it yet, as my niece is out and her I-Pod is with her. I am thinking that the best way is as you say, back up the music to a portable drive and then restore it to the new laptop.
