Just got a new laptop for work, and it's pretty cool, except for one thing...
When I tell it to shut down, it will...but then it comes back to life.
So I tried logging off, then shutting down, it did...but then came back to life.
Sometimes it takes 4 or 5 tries to kill this thing!
WTF?
Dell Inspiron 1525, Windows Vista Home Basic

Vista has a different way to actually shut down. What you THINK is the shut down button really just puts it in standby. I would do a screengrab but I'm on my XP machine at the moment.
If you press the "power" button on the computer itself, it is just standby, not off unless you reconfigure it to be so. By default, it's just standby.

By default, it's just standby. | I appreciate what you're saying, but I'm going into the start menu and choosing shut down. And it does shut down all the way. But it pops back up from the boot menu, like I've selected restart instead of shut down.
My sister-in-law's new Dell does the same thing.
Anybody have any ideas?

I know the hubby had a hard time shutting down my laptop. Like Ken said, different shutdown. Also, I don't know if your closing it before it goes off, but if so, if it's not done with the process, it will come back on when opened up again. Sorry if that doesn't help. Mine is not a Dell afterall.

When you go to the start menu in vista, there is a button that looks like a power button, don't click that, click the little triangle to the left and the choose "Shut Down"...see my picture below.....

Nope not closing it before its done.
Yes, using the arrow shutdown menu, not just the power button graphic.
I'm going to have to take it in I guess.
Ugh.

Could be a setting in the BIOS, maybe a "wake on LAN or USB event"
If you set the power button to "shutdown" when pressed, does it shutdown?

If you set the power button to "shutdown" when pressed, does it shutdown? | I've tried the second part there, no luck.
But I'll check out the first one. I don't have anything USB attached, but I do have it patched into my home network. Maybe I'll try disco'ing the network first. Quote:

I know exactly what your problem is. It starts with a D and ends in ell. I've got the 1720 and have nothing but problems with it. Still get the BSOD and occassional restarts on its own when shut down or in sleep mode.

This is my 5th Dell, (2 desktops and 3 laptops), and I've never had but one issue besides this--I had a heat sink go bad on one of the laptops. They sent me an Airborne box the very next day, and I had it back in 3 days--for free.
BTW, where in Arlington are you?

Wow! This is my second 1720 laptop because of problems. They refused to send me a new one when this one was having nothing but problems with it. I finally told them I am tired of wasting my time with tech support when they don't know what they are doing and that I was going to send my laptop back to them and want a full credit to my account... they would have none of that either.
So, in short, Dell Sucks!
(I did have a dell prior to this one that worked fine but I think it is dell and vista that cause the problem)

Disconnect from the LAN, if it's wireless turn it off, if ethernet, unplug it.
Try to shut down using the CRTL+ALT+DEL and the shutdown from that screen.
