Gout (painful) - 07-15-2008, 05:24 PM

I had heard of gout before but never seen anyone with it. I was surprised to see my neighbor in the kind of pain he was in. He has been in a bad way for a few days with his foot. He thought he had a fractured bone in his foot. Finally went to emergency room last night and they diagnosed gout and gave him some steroids and he is walking fine now. He is probably about 75 yrs. old. He was in some serious pain...........hope I never get that!!

Home remedies for gout include drinking cherry juice...

If you eat a lot of red meat, and drink a lot of red wine, you might be susceptible...

It's a form of arthritis that's supposed to be even more painful...I have arthritis in my hands and I can't imagine it being any worse than that, although I'm sure it is...Ben

Cherry juice is good, but I have have gout from time to time and I keep it at bay with cherry extract capsules. When I take those and drink lots of water I don't have any problems. Also it helps to eat lots of cherries, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. The first time I had gout, if I had a sharp knife I would have been tempted to cut my toe off because of the pain.

My dad was diagnosed with gout about 20 years ago. It is treatable, and the symptoms can be staved off somewhat. His doctor recommended at least one beer a day, which was supposed to improve circulation. Wonder if it will also help prevent it ... hmmmmm.

there is a drug that helps prevent an attack. I have had two incidents in my life and now take a pill every day that has me attack free for over 10 years.(probably shouldnt have said that). Diet also works well and you can find a list of the foods that are worse than others.

I actually had my first gout attack at the age of 26, one of the lucky few (not) and have had them on and off for years now.

Daily drug I take is Allopurinol
When I have a flare up I use Indomethacin

I was told basically limit the intact of foods high in Purines such as:
hearts, herring, mussels, yeast, smelt, sardines, sweetbreads, anchovies, grouse, mutton, veal, bacon, liver, salmon, turkey, kidneys, partridge, trout, goose, haddock, pheasant, scallops.

They also say limit alcohol and if overweight to work on loosing a few pounds.

I still eat the foods above I just don't do it every day or every week and have been attack free for almost a year (knock on wood)

Some good Foods to eat
Fresh Cherries, Strawberries, blueberries, bananas, celery, tomatoes, kale, cabbage, parsley, pineapple, foods high in vitamin C, LOTS of water, Chocolate (I told my doctor thanks for saying that in front of the wife), Tuna, nuts (various kinds)

Hopefully that helps.
