Kid's digital cameras? - 07-17-2008, 02:35 PM

Anyone have any recommendation for a child-friendly/proof digital camera? My son has the fisher price one, but the pictures are pretty horrible.

This is about as good as they get w/it:

It's gotta be a rugged thing though, because if my daughter gets a hold of it, it's bound to be dropped, repeatedly.

Buy her a Canon 1Ds Mark III in an underwater housing and covered in shock-proof foam.

lol.

I looked at this but really I think from what you are getting with you current is just because it is taken indoors and a weak flash. Open some of them in photoshop and let her go to town on them. Art is in the eye of the beholder.

Looks like maybe the newer model of the FP works a little better. My son has the first version of it. And believe me, even the outside pictures are terrible quality.

I had this problem with my nephews. Searching around I found the Kodak C530 in the Kodak refurbished store for $50. Since is a fixed lens there is little to not delay. It has an on dial with video and a single button for exposure. 5MP the kids 4 and 5 love this camera. The only issue is you need to take care when changing the battery door is fragile when open 2AA batteries used.

They love to take pictures of the celling fans and toys they are just now starting to pose people.

What about the Olympus weathersealed ones? Some of their P&S models can be used underwater, dropped onto concrete, frozen, et cetera and still function.

I have the 790sw one..... shock proof (can be dropped from 5 ft) waterproof to 15ft, and freezeproof to 14 degrees (just in case they stick it in the freezer.... lol)

It's a little costly for a 2-3 y/o though... I paid $247 on sale.

but it takes AWESOME PICS!

Yeah, $250 is a little bit much, heh. Check out this little thing.. not sure exactly how durable it is (reading reviews) but it looks tougher than normal and is very cheap http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1205538043431

Ah, and there is a kid version! http://www.arguscamera.com/products/cameras/sprout.html Now to find where they sell them.

ETA: looked around and the sprout version looks to be worse than the FP we already have. I think I may get the bean and see how it does.

How about looking on craigslist or something for an older model P&S in the 2-4mp range that you pick up for 50-70 bucks. If she trashes it, so be it.
