I'll have to side with Bryan on this one. If you are over-drafting you are not budgeting your money properly nor are you living within your means. We should ALL budget enough and leave enough room so that these banks/institutions don't nickel and dime us with service fees and what not. Overdrafting $10 then paying $120 in fees is outright stupid and ridiculous. Keep in mind these banks are businesses too, all they care about is the bottom line. If you want go spend money you dont have (and want to ruin your credit) go do it with a credit card. Some article mentioned that the average person saved -1.5% last year. and we wonder why our economy is in the ****ter.

first...bryan. dont' be a smart*** - we already said she deserved the $75 in fees. not an additional $210.00. she's a kid. she made a mistake. 75 is sufficient for that mistake. not a total of $285.00 for that mistake.
and to both of you - do you not thoroughly believe...that if a bank assessed those charges, they should show up that day? she covered her negative balance. she could have deposited $75 more had she known she would need to. i personally went there the next day to deposit her paycheck - which comes from new hampshire to here because it's her FIRST JOB and they haven't gotten direct deposit into action yet. when i was there, they could have said...hey - she's going to get hit for more OD fees if you don't put 75 more in. they had that opportunity. i was there. in person. talking to the teller. inside the bank. they did not say one word.
if you looked at the chonology of +/-, nothing was OD until the 75. explain that one. the bank couldn't. they said there is a 'balance'...and a 'ledger balance'. what you see online is the balance.
you know, one of the reasons people like this forum is there are no smartmouths here. it's one thing to make some fun of something that is 'light' and posted for the obvious reason to be made fun of. this was serious business for a young girl whose big entire paycheck was a total of $298.00 - to have pretty much the entire thing chewed up by fees that snowballed because they are not forthcoming when a customer is IN THEIR BANK.

Went with Guaranty (in Dallas), they're awesome. Rebates for all ATM fees. | I second the vote with Guaranty Bank. Always had outstanding service. I have a credit union but it's for savings only. Cullum Co. EFCU was a good place before they merged and then merged again. When I really needed them, they weren't there for me. So now I just use them as a place to park money for the short term.

I'm not arguing that the bank overdid it with the fees that is just wrong. I'm saying all of us should never be in the position to be shafted like that. We need to teach our families and kids the responsibility of money and how and when to use it. Our society is nit-picky about the most minute and inane details. This is why I pay bills at least 4-5 days before its due so I don't have to deal with overcharge, late fees, or calling them and fighting it out. Hell even if I have a dispute I sometimes pinch in some extra cash to offset the time/potential problems that may arise b/c they may state I did not pay! Hopefully, your daughter will learn from this and never have to pay a fee again. Banks will always make up BS to screw you every time.

john, i do agree we should not put ourselves in that position. we have taught our children how to be responsible with money and one of them actually listened, the one that got into trouble this time. diane is one of the most responsible 20 year old kids i know. since she was 7, she has put her responsibilities first. if you knew her, and what she's done you would agree.
she is a college student that depends on her parents for most of her income. she is not normally able to work during school as any off time is consumed with athletics. we give her enough float to get by without it being a free for all moneywise.
truth be known, i'm as pissed off at her as i can be - the whole situtation could have been avoided entirely.
i will still defend the position that if you call the bank for a balance, it should be the true balance. if you look online at your account, it should be accurate. if you are IN the bank speaking to a teller, you should be given the correct information. i firmly believe the bank should have told her when she opened the account, to put overdraft protection to her savings account. she had almost 1k in there - but she didn't know that could even have been an option.
everyone makes mistakes whether they keep a register or not, if you haven't, then you just haven't lived long enough. wait until you are 80 and can't read your own handwriting, ie, my mother. that's a whole nuther story though. i'm thankful she's in a position where $20 does not make a difference.
