Windows Media Player plugin - 07-18-2008, 02:36 PM

I put a dvd in the player, and as I was hitting the wmp icon, auto play started and locked it up. I finally got it closed out. Upon restart, wmp said it had not been properly closed last time, and was disabling plugins.

I still get video, but no audio. I even rolled back wmp 11, to 9, then reinstalled 11. I repaired Nero. On the toolbar, I went tools>plugins>wmp music plugin. That is enabled. Still no audio.

Is there somewhere else to look for the plugin? Other ideas?

Which version of Windows? Sounds like WinXP. Also, which DVD software plugin are you using.

Couple of ideas - first, clear out all temp files. Then, defrag the hard drive.

Charles,

It's XP Pro, Nero, and a new hard drive, about a week old, so defragging wouldn't likely be needed. I had been watching the dvd just a few minutes before, but had to stop, and close out WMP. When I put the dvd back in, I delayed a moment, before I hit the icon. About the time I did, auto run started and locked it up. I finally got it closed.

When I reopened, that's when it said it was disabling the plugin. I can't find but one plugin in the player, and it was disabled. I enabled it, but still, no sound from the dvd. CD's play audio, just not the dvd.

Does the DVD play correctly using Nero's media player?

Uh oh... It sounds like Nero is the plug-in WMP uses. Uninstall Nero, then upgrade to WMP 11. Then...reinstall Nero and see if that works.

I didn't ask this before but, do audio CD's or MP3's play correctly in WMP?

Yes, audio cd's play fine om WMP and Nero. But, for dvd's, only video shows up, no audio. I have reinstalled everything, but I think I will try it again. I had trouble with a monitor the other day. I repeated actions over and over, and it finally started working again. So, maybe it will do for this, as well. Thanks.
...........
I do have Media Player Classic, which works fine, so I'll just stick with that.

Have you tried a Restore. That might fix your problem.

I would look under your options menu>plugins again and see if you can add the specific plugin it may have disabled.

First take a look in the program folder for wmp to see if there's a plugin folder, I look at mine and there wan not one, then take a look in the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player folder itself and see if you can recognize if the DVD or whatever it is called .dll file is in there.
Then Add the plugin from you options>plugin tab if you found it in the wmp folder.

No plugin folder here either. Didn't see anything that would make me think it was a plugin of any kind.

Problem solved!

Just this morning, I found this, after getting a security update notice for WMP 11. I didn't know how poor WMP 11 is. Anyway, I found VCL from a thread, and PC mag, CNet, and others rate it highly.

I rolled back WMP 11 to 9, and installed VCL. It plays the DVD's like a champ. Problem solved. But, most of you probably already know about VCL. I'm always late to the party.
