I am sick of them.

Had to kill two in the past week because they're hanging out in my backyard and my garden and right where they could bite me or the shihzu. And neither one of us are very large, especially not the dog.

Just wanting to vent.

I really hope there's not another one...

Make some little signs, about business card size, that say, NO SNAKES ALLOWED! Put them around your yard, especially near your garden.

Cats are good at keeping snakes at bay. There are several roaming my neighborhood. Please come and take some of them.

When I used to live out in the "country" outside Austin my labs thought copperheads were recreation. LOL

They say geese do a great job at keeping snakes away...I don't know if it's true or not.
But I live on 2 acres near woods and a bayou, and for the 12 years I had geese around, I saw very few snakes. After the geese got killed off (By cars and coyote) I've started to see more and more snakes, albeit harmless and beneficial rat snakes, around the house. The geese were just so darned annoying with their giant turds on all the walkways and loud honking noise when someone pulled in the driveway (which isn't all that bad).

Howard, I have missed reading your posts. I guess I'm just going to have to hang out here more.

I don't have any good advice, but you're making me kind of glad I don't live near Denton anymore.

heck, we've killed 3 in the last month near Houston. We are afraid the dog will tick one of them off and it will take it out on her. Terriers tend to get a bit too focused on smaller critters.....mecifully they can move fast, but I don't know if they can move fast enough.

Molly was yapping frantically at one, I found it before it struck her and dispatched it with a shovel. A few days later, ditto, but Darla did the deed. a few more days later, she was slinging one around like a toy, which nearly sent Darla to the emergency room with a coronary..... we don't know if it was dead before Molly found it or not, but was by the time we got it away from her.

A former boss had a pup killed by one a few years ago. It was a very small dog (2-3 lbs) and a full grown diamondback rattlesnake. In our case, Molly is a bit bigger and the snakes have been a lot smaller/immature.

But where there's babies.....

we've been spreading 'snake-away' (like powdered mothballs) around the area. No idea if it works, but we're doing it anyway.

Snakes. I hate them...ALL of them! My parents use Snake Away around their house in the country. It seemed to help until the get a big rain that washes it away. It aparently smells really bad, but if it would keep the snakes away I would take that trade off!

There's one important rule. ALL snakes are poisonous. When I was about 7 I was in the back yard while the yard maintenance guy was there. That was over 4 decades ago. He would make a fire in the back corner and burn all the leaves he raked up. We had an acre and about 1/8 of it was covered in ivy. As I walked along by it I saw a copperhead. I yelled and George came over with the hoe. He dispatched it and tossed it on the fire. About 20 feet farther along I saw another. George just scooped it up on the hoe and tossed it on the fire. It landed near the edge. Rather than slither a few inches to the clear it went up the leaf pile farther into the fire and coiled around the other one and burned up with it. It was interesting and a little disturbing.

Well, your posts always make me laugh. I'll let you decide if I'm laughing with you or at you.

This thread is like a train wreck. It's really giving me the wiggins and yet I just keep coming back and reading more. I really don't have anything against snakes... except that I think they're creepy and I don't want my kids near them.

Am I the only one here who doesn't want to harm a snake unless I absolutely have to????? I appreciate them for keeping my yard fairly clear of rats and mice, and I have yet to see a snake that didn't run once they knew I was there.

Live and Let Live is my motto.

I'm with you George.

I've never worked with a Copperhead before. If anyone in Houston has one in their yard, PM me and I'll remove it, shoot it (with a Mark III) and turn it loose along the Brazos River.

Here's a few for us snake lovers...
