Hurricane a coming... - 07-22-2008, 07:53 PM

So is anyone doing anything to prepare for the Hurricane. I know I'm making sure my camera is ready to catch any action, permitting it doesn't become worst and I have to evacuate.

let's hope you just need a loooong lens, AJ. Go ahead and get all those batteries charged now, too.

Stay safe.

Thanks for the concern Ken. I do have a long lens, but I'm only thinking were going to get a lot of rain and some flooding. I'm not too far down south. As long as it doesn't change directions.

I've sat through a category 2 and a category 3. They're not that big a deal unless the area is completely unprepared for it. Stay inside during, stay out of flood plains or low coastal areas, etc.

Afterwards expect downed power lines, signs, lights, trees.

That's with a direct hit though. If it skirts you, you essentially get some wind and rain.

Thanks Alex, but I've been through a few hurricanes so I'm well prepared. I don't see too much coming from this one, but I'm still keeping an eye out. Great thing about a hurricane approaching, some great sunsets come out. Here's a picture I took near my house.

My friend is down there covering it for KSAT right now. I'm soooo jealous! They just got the first squall about an hour ago.

Cat 1, childs play. I remember hiking through a Cat 2 hurricane while in the marines. I wish I was down there, damn work.

Yeah, relatively weak. I rode out Rita, which was much worse, in a church with 1 other family when I was covering it. We had tornadoes all over the place and major flooding. My friend called from there about 30 min. ago and said the winds are up to about 60mph now. I guess the main concern is the flooding. Apparently, he said, a lot of ppl decided to leave at the last minute. Hope you guys that are down there are safe.

That's a great picture Jennifer. There really hasn't been too much activity. I mean the waves aren't even that big, and only on the island parts. Which most of those roads are closed, so you can't get to it unless you swim or take a boat. Other than that it's been a lot of wind and rain. Right now it's calm, but still haven't had the sun come up so I'm waiting for a beautiful sunset tonight. Other than that, a catergory one or two isn't bad. It's how the city prepares for it that makes it worst, incase catastrophe happens. Right now everyone is so far doing their job. But, there isn't anything to be concerned at least in our area. Any TPFer's in Brownsville, stay safe.

We have gotten 4 inchs today with more rain on the way. The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Watch for us about an hour ago because there was circulation in town. IT never touched down but still scared the crap out of me, I am sitting here with 3 young kids trying to keep them calm.

There has been quite a bit of rain and the wind is blowing. There have been roofs blown off and windows blown out on South Padre Island. Brownsville has some wind damage. A lot of the lower valley is without power, being I am within a few miles of the hospital I'm lucky and still have power, though my land line and dsl service is down. Good thing I have a mobile card.
