Pregnancy question - 07-24-2008, 09:26 AM

Weird question, how long does someone have to wait after giving birth to their first child before trying to have a second child? Can they have one right after another?

That is an odd question! LOL

My sister had one child, then the very first time her and her hubby *did it* after her daughter was born, she got preggo again with her son.

My doctor recommended waiting a year before getting pregnant again.

I have a couple friends who have had kids 10 months apart. My two oldest daughters are ten months apart, but they are both adopted, so that probably doesn't count.

Might be best to approach your doctor about this, but what do I know, I'm just a guy....

Mike.

If you follow Doctor instructions, 9 months plus 6 weeks. (Wait 6 weeks before having sex after childbirth to give the female parts time to recover.)

But I have known people with kids that are only 9 months apart.

From someone who has experienced Gods sense of humor...you don't have to wait for any length of time. My twins and the 3rd child were 14 months apart. My doctor tried to make me feel better by telling me about one of his patients that had two sets of twins 9 months apart....(they didn't wait their 6 weeks after the first set of twins-I bet they did on the second set!!!!).

My kids are 14 months between the 1st and 2nd and 17 months between the 2nd and 3rd.
The second was "oh it wasn't bad (no drug delivery) so lets do it again and get it over with lol.
3rd well we "planned" to wait but obviously God had other plans for us lol.

With that said I think I have it easier than my sister. My kids are 10, 9 and 8 next month. Hers are 13, (lost a set of triplets), 10, 7, and 4. She can't get anything done etc... Mine play together etc... so it works for us. BUT I had Postpartum depression and back then you didn't talk about it. The dr just kept saying that "oh it is just the baby blues etc... it will go away." It didn't. My dd, the youngest was 4 before I finally got help and then it was a LONG hard battle. I say this cause statistics show that women with children close in age are more likely to develop depression and a more severe case than women who spread them out.

As a close friend of a couple who have 5 kids, oldest is 8, I'd say it's safe to have one right after another ;)

(However, my dad always told me it's best to wait until the youngest is out of diapers before going for the next...)

You can get pregnant right after the birth of a child depending on when you start o ovulate again. Most doctors think it is best to give your body some time to get its hormones back to normal.

It happens, but what we've been told is that the best thing to do is wait a year between pregnancies. It doesn't mean the second kid won't turn out fine, but the female body is a complex instrument that needs time to heal.

Plus, depending on your love of diapers, our deal was letting the first one get a running head start toward potty training before trying for the second. Others may want the diapers at one time so as not to drag 'em out for years.

And The Pill plus Post Partum.... <shudder> but that's a totally different story...

Random trivia: the 6 weeks waiting period is supposed to be the reason Douglas Adams chose "42" as his answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything... 6 weeks times 7 days/week is 42 days.
