Good write up....BUT

The quickest way to tune Vista performance is to dump is and downgrade to XP Pro.

Gotta watch out for these Vista haters, Stanford. Some of them just don't understand.

Ditto here, Lance.

Haha, funny Rich. Actually I really like my Vista x64 a lot better. I can see all 8GB of my memory and Lightroom 2 64bit runs circles around my Lightroom 2 beta on my 32bit XP box. Plus my Vista boxes are actually stable, unlike my crappy G5. I can wait until Photoshop CS4 64bit gets released.

I know sonny. There are always going to be haters out there :)

You should try running Window Server 2008, it is based on Vista Technology so it looks and feels like vista, but runs soo much smoother. I am impressed, Flight Sim X runs so nice.

I personally am running XP pro X64. My speed test specs were in the top .05%

Not to shabby.

Dont know if you vista peeps have seen or heard of blackviper, but if you want to tweak your OS on your own he seems to have tons of good info. And he has cool cats.

I "upgraded" to Vista last summer when my XP computer crashed. I prefer XP and don't understand why something that good had to be replaced with something so user unfriendly as Vista. However, I'm getting used to Vista and some aspects are ok, but I still don't like it on the whole. The only way I think they could make Vista better would be to turn it back into XP. My thoughts only so please don't criticize.

You most certainly entitled to your thoughts :) they changed a TON in Vista and it takes a bit to figure out where they put everything.

One of the things that drove me absolutely nuts was the UAC (User Account Control). The stupid thing that pops up asking me if im sure I want to do what I told it I wanted to do. I was so ecstatic when I found out how to turn it off!

Currently Windows Server 2008 is priced at about $700 retail. I wouldn't recommend that for a normal desktop OS. Not just because of its price range but because of the features a server OS includes that the user would know nothing about.

Vista has been great for some people and a disaster for others. I am still running XP Pro and will be for a long time. I work in the I.T. field so I have no need for MS support. So let it expire. But just FYI, Microsoft has already admitted that Vista made some mistakes and they are already working on a new OS to follow it up. Which im sure will fix all our problems. LOL

Seriously, if I could do everything I do daily on Linux id be quite happy.

I was more just amazed at how much faster it processes :) But yes the cost is quite high, but we have MSDN so we can use it for "developmental" purposes under the MSDN license.

Have you tried Parallels in Linux? I use it in Mandriva Linux to run windows in a virtual environment. It rocks man!

Never had a problem with Vista. My computer runs it like a champ. Custom built with all the latest and greatest and only 1 gb ram, runs better than my xp ever did and its 5 years old if not older. UAC was annoying for two seconds until I figured out how to shut it off. You can blame all the hate from retailers and microsoft putting it on computers that are way too generic to run it. Sucks for the consumer who doesn't know better (I'm in I.T.) and shame on microsoft for making such hefty requirements.
