Question PS locked up - help! - 07-29-2008, 02:06 PM

So, PS is the only thing on my computer that locked up. I hit SAVE AS and it locked up. Now its dinging at me. Firefox will open. CPU usage says 00. Is there anyway to save this image or am I just screwed? It was kind of a bunch of work to dump it, but its taking longer to try and get it to save. The window that appears when I usually save isnt popping up. I tried crtl + S and that didnt work either. Any ideas before I chuck it and start over?

Press the ESC key to unfreeze the program and then try to save it again by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S (PC) or Cmd+Shift+S (Mac) to access the "Save As" dialog box. I actually had this problem before and that did the trick for me.

Hmm, this might be an issue with Version Cue. Is PS still totally frozen, or will it allow you to access the Preferences dialog when you press Ctrl+K? If so, you can try disabling Version Cue from the "File Handling" tab of the Preferences dialog.

PS is locked....nothing you can do....

Have you checked the task manager to see what all is running? Right click on the task bar and select it. Start killing other processes that aren't PS. See if it is a secondary issue. After that (and assuming that PS worked) save the file as a PSD and reboot to bring back the files you killed.

I killed everything that can be turned off. Other windows will open for other programs, just not PS.

I cant get it to save the psd.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete will open a process dialogue box. If you click on Task Manager it will tell you if PS is still running or if it is not responding (DOA).

It says CPU usage for photoshop is 00. System Idle is 98. It usually says non responsive by now and crashes. It says RUNNING. Its not crashing. Its stuck.

Holly, I take it you have CS3? Unfortunately, this issue seems to be a problem with that version. (Perhaps other versions, too, but many people seem to have it with CS3.) It's "just" a bug with the program, not the typical program crash one usually sees. Not good at all.

One last left-field idea: Are there any PS dialogs open "behind" the main PS window after you hit ESC? If it's possible, hit ESC and re-size or minimize your PS window to see if there's anything there. You can also try Alt+Space to access the Restore or Minimize commands.

In any case, I feel your pain. The best thing by now is probably to cut your losses and start over.

Yep, CS3. I got the window to min via ALT+CTRL+DEL. Too bad they didnt put save there. There is no dialog box. Too bad. The image turned out nice. I was all done. It froze when I went to save. The dialog box looked like it opened and then vanished. I tried save as, and then save. It froze with the save. Ironically, bridge is working fine...which is the one usually giving me grief. Oh well. I give up. Is there a patch for this?

Maybe I have a bug? I did ALT+CTRL+DEL and closed the program. I opened it again and went to save the basic stuff I did and save the rest for later...It wont save. It did the same thing. I just shut the whole computer down to restart. What gives?

I think it's more likely just a problem with Photoshop. Of course, as always, make sure you have all the latest Windows and Photoshop updates, virus check, etc.

There really seems to be an issue with the latest Version Cue in CS3 for both PC and Mac. I've seen more than one source report that disabling VC seemed to fix the problem. For what it's worth, see here and here.
