Seeking Birth photographer in Austin - 07-30-2008, 05:27 PM

I'm due during one of the busiest holidays of the year...the one no one likes to miss....THANKSGIVING...and while I know this may make it impossible to find someone who is willing to be "on call" for when I deliver, I thought I'd post up just in case someone dislikes their family enough to go for it.

My exact due date is Nov 30th, but we know anything goes two weeks before or even after that date. I'll be delivering in Austin and prefer someone w/ experience in this so I can see a portfolio of your style.

If you are interested, please post up.

I sent ya a pm. I can post some in a day or two.
I have had a couple people that wanted something done but right before they said NO. The couples thought about what it was going to really be like and I told them from first hand experience. After that it was a NO GO. The couples just really didnt want a stranger in the room. which i could understand but once they had the child they changed their mind and wished some one was there that could have really captured the moment. Both couples thought the video just didnt do it justice and the father was never in any of the video.

I have thought about putting something together to market through the Doctors. Just haven't really thought it out enough.

I'm an obstetrician.
With 5 partners I have to be 100% available 1/6th of my life, instantly ready to drop whatever I may be doing to run to L&D.

I've always thought that being a birth photographer would be a fascinating and gratifying job/avocation.
On a daily basis I see wonderful missed priceless photo ops in the peri-partum time.

But.......
I have to recognize that being a solo birth photographer would be a prohibitively demanding job, were you expected to be available 24 hours daily 365 days of the year. It's not like shooting weddings where you know precisely when to be there. Babies respect no time or clock, believe me!
Even with 5 partners obstetrics can be hard on me and my family.....my having missed so very many fleeting events in the life of my growing family.

Maybe a group of 4 photographers could sell themselves in a big market as birth photographers. Even then you would, with covering multiple hospitals, have to have backup coverage for concomitant births which would inevitably happen. That would mean, with four shooters, 24 hour availability ever other day of the year.

It sounds interesting, albeit logisticaly daunting!

Hopefully someone will take you up on it.
Good luck with the labor and birth BTW!

Quite often when the new dad is busy fussing with his wife/partner and new baby I'll grab their ever-present camera(s) and shoot some photos for them once my doctor-job is done. I usualy get a puzzled look when I turn off the flash and dial up the ISO a bit. Our LDR's have great light for photos without the horrible flash!
