TS Edouard not looking good for HOU / GLS - 08-04-2008, 12:20 AM

I saw the little disturbance this morning when I checked the weather. Now it's a Tropical Storm and the gulf coast of TX is under a hurricane watch... That thing spun up quick!

We just got home from the grocery store, most of the bread, all of the water and can goods were disappearing fast.

I can never remember the site to go to for the hurricane info -- so count me as a big plus one that the first result when you type "hurricane" into google is the place that I am looking for...

Doesn't have a thing to do with Edouard, but a little tidbit that I appreciate none-the-less.

The link I supplied is pretty good (National Hurricane Center) but if you know a little about weather you can do a pretty good job of predicting things by looking at the aviation forecasts. The upper level wind forecasts do a good job of predicting where it will go.

This one looks like it's going to be "wobbly" as far as predicting what it's going to do (not path) goes. They've got a lot of errors in their models (from what I've read). But it also looks like it'll make hurricane strength tomorrow night-ish and has a real good chance of hitting Galveston-ish HOWEVER they do say that the angle it's coming in at is so oblique that the slightest change in track could drastically affect where it comes in.

I hate (and sort of understand why) when people panic... but having been driving in Houston when a hurricane hit... and lived through a few of them (since Carla hit Port Lavaca)... I think that people cause more problems by over reacting than is necessary... We have really good information resources now. Watch it... develop a plan... deal with it. Don't react to it...

I just hope it doesn't screw up the panel that a customer of mine just installed on a platform out on the Mississippi river...

They just updated the forecast. If it stays on track, landfall around noon Tuesday... A lot can change in the next few days though.

Its a tropical storm, not a hurricane, what the issue?

I think the issue is that there is a possibility that it could gain hurricane force winds before making landfall. Evan tropical storms can do major damage and knock out power for a few days.

they're estimating at least a Cat 1 by the time it hits land, it won't be anything on the scale of Katrina or Rita a couple of years back, but TS Allison caused a lot of damage to Houston because of the way it dumped rain for a few days and just stalled out.

The difference between a tropical storm and a hurricane is only 1 mph in sustained winds.

well...i'm about to venture out this morning and see how the crazies are doing. 2 stops at the computer store and fry's - then off to pasadena to pick up my mom. she doesn't want to be by herself - so her and little to-to (haha, really it's zoe) are coming to stay for a few days. and hey - she's 80 - whatever she wants.

i did speak to my brother for those of you that know his situation - and he has to get in touch with his wife's doctor this morning - he has enough battery power for 13 hours of oxygen - because the big-butt generator he has is not yet hard wired to his house. that's the biggest issue for them would be to lose power. and that's a possibility just with a bad thunderstorm...
