Question Teaching Connections? DFW? - 08-11-2008, 12:04 PM

I have a B.S. in Photography and a minor in Mass Comm. I have taken the Technology Applications EC-12 and the Journalism 8-12 certs and am awaiting results. I have been putting applications all over the DFW area.

Does anybody have any connections to any school districts? I would prefer to teach high school but will teach any age. Just trying to start this fall.

Thanks
Ryan

I feel your frustration.
I don't know anyone directly, but if something turns up, I'll definitely keep you in mind. Now that I know someone in need, I'll pay attention if someone speaks about the subject.

Most districts around here take applications online through their respective Web sites. The process is pretty cut-and-dried and objective, and unless you know someone personally it probably won't help much. My wife is public information officer for a school district here, but she mainly has connections with other school PR people. Good luck!

I teach photography, journalism, writing, and English. There are very few positions for just photography or journalism each year in any district. It is good to have expertise and possibly certification in other areas, too. If you haven't already, connect with these two groups: http://www.taje.org/ and http://www.atpi.org/. You can also check listings through the Web sites for the different regions of the TEA. Start here to find the regions in your area: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/ESC/.

One other point. You're more likely to find employment with harder-to-fill schools. I have a relative who teaches at-risk students, and it's a calling.

A good suggestion. To teach in the college classroom as an adjunct normally requires at least 18 graduate hours in the teaching field. However, there might be lab instructor, etc. positions available. In DFW Richland College and Brookhaven College in the Dallas Community College system have good photography programs. Collin County has an excellent program. I don't know the others.
