I have never really counted how many I eat in a day, but it is probably approaching half that...

My fat boy belly starts to scream and yell if I don't give it the appropriate amount of fried goodness that it wants in a day.

As far as the gaining or losing -- probably been gaining between 1-3 a year for the past 5 years. I ballooned up for three years after getting out of the army, and then pretty much leveled off at where I am now

You forget to say that all he does is Eat, Sleep, and Swim/Train so its a tad different for most people.

I personally eat around probably 3500 calories in a day and stay around 180 lbs trying to gain weight but it just doesn't happen. I sit all damn day and cant manage to gain any weight. I am 6'4" so im kinda small really..

I was cramming in over 5000 a day back when I was running 100+ miles / week (I'm 5'8", 135)... Can't imagine eating over double that...

"...Three sandwiches of fried eggs, cheese, lettuce, tomato, fried onions and mayonnaise, add one omelet, a bowl of grits, and three slices of french toast with powdered sugar, then wash down with three chocolate chip pancakes"

His breakfast, thats just crazy.

From what I've read, he's closer to 185 lbs. Without any significant exercise, an ordinary person at 185 lbs needs about 2800 calories to maintain weight. Of course, Phelps' is almost entirely muscle, and he probably burns more calories sitting down than most people do while working out.

For an ordinary person his size to maintain that weight while eating that much, they would have to burn about 9200 more calories. From what I've read, a typical athelete on the Tour de France eats somewhere between 6000-8000 calories/day. And that takes alot of concentration on eating. I'm not sure, but I doubt that even Sumo wrestlers eat that much.

According to the first online calculator I pulled up, it would take 9 hours of cycling at 20 mph to burn that many calories. Or approximately 11 hours of fast lap swimming. A marathon, running 6.5 minute miles would only burn about 4000 calories, so its basically impossible to put this kind of energy drain onto the body with running.

The thing I liked about his diet is that he's eating somewhere around 56 eggs/week. I'm sure his cholesterol is through the roof :)

When I was in the marine corps I was eating 3-5 MRE's a day. Each MRE's contain about 2500-3000 calories.....

Backpacking in Alaska a couple of weeks ago, I lost 7 lbs in 7 days and I was inhaling all the high energy food I could get a hold of. I have no idea what the calorie intake was.

hmm - seems high for some of you.

sure it all depends but this appears more like the norm {from a diet blog} ...

The government periodically surveys Americans to find out what they are eating and the latest results from the year 2000 are 2,666 calories per day (by men) and 1,877 (by women) with 49% carbohydrates (by men) and 52% (by women), 33% fat (by men and women), 11% saturated fats (by men and women), 16% protein (by men) and 15% (by women).

A Football Lineman is said to eat near 8000 Calories a Day but then weights like 300 lbs.

It's going to suck for him when he no longer trains like he does, cause his body's gonna still want that food until his metabolism adjusts... a fat Michael Phelps...?

When I was a freshman playing college basketball back in the early 80's, I was only 210 pounds (at 6' 7") and the coaches wanted me at 225 for my position. I went on an 8,000 calorie a day diet and never gained a pound over the course of a month. The team trainers then upped my diet to 10,000 calories a day with supplements and then a third time to 11,000 calories per day. I was working out 4 hours a day, 7 days a week on the basketball court and I was also in the weightroom 5 days a week. Over the course of that entire basketball season, I took in over 1,350,000 calories and my weight never got over 220 in five months.

Now, as an old f**t, I keep my daily diet under 2000 calories, or I'll balloon up like a bloated corpse. I'm still around 212, but boy do I miss the 10,000 calorie days!
