Question Archival DVDs? - 08-13-2008, 09:24 PM

A few archival DVD questions:
1. Can someone please tell me about how many 12mp JPEG images will fit on a DVD?
2. Are all DVD discs archival DVDs or must I buy a certain kind or brand?
If only certain ones are archival, where do I buy them?
3. Will any big box type stores have them to buy off the shelf?

Thanks!
CarolynM

Light Impressions has the ones I use. Expensive, but worth it.

1: Tough to tell. Each will be a slightly different size. Figure about 2.5MB each (average, based on saving from PSCS3 at Level 10 compression) then do the math (4.4GB/2.5MB) or about 1,700

2: No. Only thing guaranteed about a DVD is that it will fail at some point. Best ones are from Taiyo Yuden. Google is your friend.

3. Doubt local stores will carry that brand.

my thoughts on optical media for archival storage....not reliable IMO

Use Magnetic media..

Here is the fine print.....if your DVD fails with in the 100 years, we will give you another DVD. It doesn't protect your data
