Not sure if anyone has mentioned this or not, but in the state of Texas you can now keep your license plates. This would prevent all the aformentioned problems with people running tolls and not transfering the title.

I've sold three cars to private buyers in Texas. They were all paid off and old enough (cheap enough) for the new buyers to bring along cash.

You sign the title over with a form and on the title. The new buyer takes it to their county tax assessor's office to register it and pay the sales tax (and the tax is now based on the blue book value of the car rather than what they paid for it). The sale is always "as is," and I make that clear verbally as well as on any signage I use, as even dealers won't offer warranties on cars of certain ages or mileage.

Save yourself the time of going to Carmax and just check Kelley Blue Book for a "private party sale" & if you do not go to the tax office to transfer the title, there is a fomr you can fill-out at the tax office that shows you sold the car (don't remember the form number)

Go talk to your tax office and they'll give you all the details & forms

Thanks for all the great advice. I sold my car on Sunday and picked up my new one today. I casually mentioned to a friend at church that I was looking to sell, and one hour later he bought it. It couldn't have been easier.
