I've been thinking about getting into new home construction and the sales part of it but I dont know WHERE the industry is heading. any insight?

Hmmmm, I just took a leak and the housing market was at the bottom of my toilet.

not really new homes sales, but rather new home construction part of it also. I'm sure the market will get better and stronger.

As long as you plan to stay local, and dont expect toi see the house before you start "I" think you will be OK. As in anything, keep your expectations realistic.
The markey here in the DFW area, is a "little" soft, but not bad. The Boom is over for now, but again, be realistic and things are OK. If you plan on being a "sub contractor" to a builder, just be careful and dont let them get in arears to far.

It sure will get better and stronger, but when? You can't go off of what the "analysts" say, because they are just like weathermen, or perhaps worse. That said, some areas have not had it all that bad and construction goes on. San Antonio lost some value, but in some places did not. That didn't stop the almost dead halt of new construction, though.

Personal prediction: Late '09 for any semblance of a recovery barring no further disasters. You will most likely never see a return to the glory days leading up to the dump. Watch the GSE Fannie / Freddie story closely, because that will have a lot of say in the matter.
