Question Method of Photos in a portfolio & dating them? - 08-27-2008, 09:26 PM

When people did their own B&W film processing in an actual darkroom, often a mat was added and then the photographer put his/her signature on the mat with a date and perhaps numbered how many copies were printed then. In the digital photography class(es) I have taken, a few of our best photos are printed for display on the last day in an art show and mat boards have not been used. Instead of leaving these printed photos in a manilla envelope, I've started putting them in clear Presentation Sheet Protectors and then I put the protected photos into a ring binder. Since I have some photos from different years, I would like to put at least the year if nothing else on the photos. All are printed on the 8.5x11 glossy photo paper, some with 1 photo, some with 2 photos on the same page. All have white photo paper borders since the photo papers are letter sized paper for color photo printers. Is it advisable to write a photo title and date in the border of the photos? If yes, what kind of writing pen or pencil and kind of ink or lead do I need to use?
Or would I be better off creating a title/date label of some sort from some kind of paper and attach it to the photo somehow? Do I need to use archival papers like scrapbooking folks use and archival ink pens? Can I create and print the label with the same inkjet printer that I use to print my photos? How do I safely attach the title/date label to each photo if there is no pen or pencil I can use in writing on the photo border itself?
Please do advise!

Also, how do you professionals display or show your photos to others? How do you display a title and/or photo date? Do you always sign each photo in your portfolio and what do you use to sign and WHERE on the photo do you sign your name? Please advise.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
CarolynM

I do labels on the back of the photos with a format that I put together to attempt to maintain consistency. If I wanted to show them with the names, It probably put the stickers on the portfolio page itself, but that may get messy if you rearrange it.
