Spider Outbreak - Warning for the Squeamish! - 08-27-2008, 11:15 PM

I've had a spider outbreak around the house and was worried that they are Brown Recluses. I actuall got a bite tonight out in the yard so I broke out the macro lens and shot one on a glue trap here. According to info I Googled, the Brown Recluse has six eyes. These guys have eight eyes, so I guess I lucked out. I like photographing spiders and snakes, but enough is enough. Yuck!

It's unlikely that you would feel a brown recluse bite.

At least I didn't feel the one that got me......

My wife had a much more serious reaction -- the bite (on her wrist) caused an infection that traveled up her arm, headed towards her heart. Luckily, we caught it in time (just about the time the swelling reached her shoulder)

$877 later, she was fine.....

Look for the Violin on the abdomen. The Black Widows and Brown Recluses have them.

This is a tell tale sign of the spiders.

personally, I actually like them (not in my house) but in the garden and outside they eat fly's and mosquitoes. A++ in my book.

How do you get them to roll over onto their backs to check??? Rub their bellys!!!

I've also seen a larger number of spiders this year around the house, even some brown recluses.

Great "fiddle back". The black widow actually has an hour glass instead of the fiddle shape.

Nice macro in the first image.

Gross. I used to not care about spiders one way or another. I hated beetles. Gross. Their little claw-like feet get stuck in your hair. Bleh...Then I moved here.

I swear, everything bigger in Texas shouldnt pertain to bugs. Bugs the size of birds is just wrong. Every year when the frost comes, these nasty large brown spiders try to make their way into my home (we live by a field). One night Mike and I were sitting on the couch and I could hear its creaking as it ran across the floor. The pitter patter of 8 little feet. SO skeeved! You're not supposed to hear spiders! And that one was the size of a dog. GROSS!

Spiders are cool, they serve a purpose, and a very good one I might add. But slugs, come on that's just gross. Slimy, freaky lookin', GROSS!

Great macro shot by the way.
