Need wireless card recommendations - 08-29-2008, 09:51 AM

Trying to find a PCI wireless card for a small form factor PC seems impossible. I've found many cards that are low profile, but the brackets are not.

My next option would be a USB network adapter. Unfortunately, I've never owned or used on so I have no clue what brands are great, good, or bad. This is where I need your help.

Can you recommend a few choices of USB2.0 Wireless Network Adapters?

requirements:
  • 54 MB/s
  • N or G
  • moderate price range
  • and of course, best signal strength

I picked up a "Linksys dual band wireless N gaming adapter" the other day, that basically plugs into the ethernet port to connect back to the access point.

We had a customer that needed to get a computer on the network, and an ethernet drop to that location would have been highly impractical, and adding hardware to the small form factor machine was not an option. I had some negative experiences with USB adapters in the past, so we gave this a try, and it is working wonderfully.

I think it was right at a $100 after taxes, etc (could be wrong, just going from memory)

You might look at that as an option, as it was completely easy to set up, and basically extends your wired network.

I know exactly what you mean. I had to install a PCI wireless card in a small form factor Dell to give it wireless ability. I searched every one of my normal parts sites. Plenty of PCI wifi cards, zero cards with a short bracket to fit this case. I had to get clever. I literally ended up getting a normal card and took a hacksaw to the top inch or so of the bracket. I measured, cut, then popped the card in the case and used black electric tape to steady the bracket against the case. Not what I wanted to do, but it works and looks the same from the outside. Most of those small form factor wifi cards are OEM and are only sold to PC makers such as Dell, HP, etc.

There are lots of USB 2.0 Wifi cards. I would say check out newegg.com for a good selection.

Linksys, Belkin, D-link all make a USB wireless card. I personally would go with Linksys.

Here one is for 69.99 and is N+G compatible. (Chief value is a division of Newegg)

Belkin has the F5D8053 which a friend is using.

$59 at Wal-Mart and you can go pick it up if one is near your zip code.
