iPhone loading pictures - 08-30-2008, 02:49 AM

One of the main reasons I got the iPhone was the ability to show my portfolio images to people, on the spot, as I run into them through my normal day. I assumed it would be easy to show them locations, weddings, bridals, portraits and such. I thought it would be easy to upload images to the phone. My old phone showed up as a drive on my PC and I could copy, paste, download and upload images very easily like a normal PC drive.

I thought I could create a folder for whatever subject and then put images in the desired folder. I may be missing something but I can not create those folders and upload to them like a drive. iPhone wants me to use iTunes to "optimize" (whatever that means) and sync the images with a folder on my PC.

It is doing a horrible job. Two problems:
1. One set of images look great on my PC, but by the time they get optimized and moved to the iPhone something horrible happens. The blacks block up so bad you can not see details on half of the image.
2. A different set of images was uploaded and they are now out of focus.

What am I missing?

I start with web size images that are the same resolution as the native display (480x320 @ 163ppi). That way you are in control of the image and not iTunes. It will also do a pretty good job with my 'standard' online portfolio size which is 700x525 @ 72ppi. I've not tried to let it resize full size images. sRGB color space seems to do the best, but because it runs OS X, you should be able to use aRGB also (not that display has that gamut capability...)

I'm guessing you're giving it much larger images to downsize.

Yes in my tests I was using larger images. I wanted to see how iPhone would handle the large files and whether I could zoom in on them like it will do images and web pages. I am going to try formatting them to the iPhone format this weekend and see how that works.

(typing this from my 3G) it's not that hard to transfer photos to the iPhone. You can create a new folder/ category under the "photos" tab in iTunes by clicking "file" then "add new folder" and name it what you want. I have folders for weddings, other peoples work, e-sessions, models, and so on. I also used full-size jpegs co vertex from RAW files and saved at quality 10 in ps, and they look great until you really zoom in alot. Then they get a bit blocky. I wonder if there is a way to import very high res photos into the iPhone...

You have to create set of folders and upload the files via iTunes.

I have no problem with image quality.

I have one main directory for photos on my pc that i have synced with my iphone. the directory is named:

Ipod - Photos

Under that one main directory I have a ton of sub directories listed as such:

Inspire - Bands
Inspire - Engagements
Inspire - Glamour
Inspire - Men's Portraits
Inspire - Women's Portraits
etc
etc

Within each of those directories includes images for that particular category. In iTunes under the photo tab i simply tell it that i want that original Ipod - Photos directory to be synced. In iTunes I can also rearrange the order of how the directories listed.

Sync it up and thats it.... it's done.
