Yeah, well, we all have our vices, and if you'd seen some of the horrific stuff I've seen, you might smoke, too.

i wish people would quit picking on smokers. it's not like we don't know what the risks are.

you know, my dentist tried to blame some recent problems on my smoking...and let me tell you how hard his a&& was chewed out. the instruction sheet that goes home with people is...if you smoke, don't for 48 hours. well folks, if it were that easy...don't you think we'd all just quit?

in a perfect world....

Agreed, Janet. I actually quit for 5 years until two things happened back to back. They thought my daughter had melanoma (she was only 12 at the time) which started it, then I went to Haiti.

Although I smoke, I know the risks, but still do it anyway. The surprising thing is some of my friends don't smoke, and in respect to them, I don't smoke around them, if we go out, a lot of places have a ban on smoking in public places ie restaurants, bars, bus stops, etc. You think I would quit. No, tired, and as a doctor told me "I'm not ready to quit." So I continue.

5 bucks a pack in a jar would pay for a new lens- think of it as trading one addiction for another.

Ugh. I see this thread spinning out of control quickly. I'll just sit back and watch until it gets locked.

It's a catch 22. I've watched my father in law die a 8 year death from smoking. It was not pretty. I've also taught a stop smoking class. I know how hard it is to quit and the guilt that goes with it. Condemnation doesn't help people quit. But we like you and don't want you to smoke!!!! :)

Well, we like you too but we want to smoke. lol

In all seriousness, that's why I still smoke. I enjoy it. Sad to say, but its true. I've enjoyed it for the 10+ years I've been smoking. Do I know I need to quit? yep. Do I want to? no, not yet. I do want to eventually, but not right now.

here is where i am coming from.

Both of my parents smoked. In the house, car, everywhere. I have asthma- a permanent 33% reduction in lung function. I was diagnosed at the age of two- and the Dr.'s told them to quit, or do it outside away from me. They did not, and it eventually killed my mother. She was diagnosed at the age of 66 with stage IV lung cancer. She lasted less than 60 days. My dad quit for two weeks- and still smokes now.

It must be a hard addiction to break- if you can't do it to protect your kids health, it must have a grip on you. In later years thier response was "we know the risks, and we'll take our chances.

They were of a different generation- when no one knew better. They both started smoking when they were 15-16 years old.

Just last month, my wife's brother (53) was diagnosed with stage iv small cell squamoas carcinoma of the neck. He is a life long smoker as well, and has undergone a radical neck disection to remove all of his lyphnodes, and has lost the use of one arm due to the operation. One armed electricians don't get much work. He had to have all of his teeth removed on one side of his mouth to prepare for radiation and chemo, which will last a year.

I know it's a personal choice, and smokers know the risks.... i just wish someone would come p with a "silver bullet" to make it easier.
Eric

Well, just an fyi, I never smoked during my pregnancies or while breast feeding, and I never smoke around my kids. I only smoke outside. I do not want them to be affected by second hand smoke. I also go away from people that don't smoke when I'm out, unless they don't mind it. I went to a party once, and people were wondering why I was sitting further away when we were outside. I told them it was because I didn't want to offend them with my cigarette smoking. So, I do try and be respectful of others. Some day, I will quit. Right now, I'm not quite ready to.
