google chrome - new (better) terms of service. - 09-04-2008, 04:16 PM

I felt it was appropriate to start a new thread on this specific topic..
On this in another thread talking about the new google web brower: http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...ghlight=chrome many of us showed conern with the terms, and we weren't the only ones. They've changed the terms...

"

So for Google Chrome, only the first sentence of Section 11 should have applied. We're sorry we overlooked this, but we've fixed it now, and you can read the updated Google Chrome terms of service. If you're into the fine print, here's the revised text of Section 11:

11. Content license from you
11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services."

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/...-terms-of.html

so you photogs can stop being paranoid and let google rule the world now.

Paranoia is not a mental disorder. It is a lifestyle choice. :)

And no one is forcing you to use their browser.. don't like it, don't use it.

They removed the part where they grant themselves your permission to use, modify, display, distribute, etc your personally copyrighted material. They removed it from the Chrome EULA, but they have not removed it from all their other applications (Google Docs, Google Desktop, Picasa, Google Video, etc).

So Google has done the bare minimum to get out from under the bad press instead of applying a single standard across the board. I'm sorry, Google, but you are still far away from your motto of "Do no evil." The fact that doing the bare minimum seems acceptable ranks them among career politicians in my mind. And it puts them squarely at Microsoft's level, ethically.

Geez, do I have to teach everything ?
1984 was a science fiction novel by Orville (Redenbacker).
It was then turned into a movie.
The movie starred John Belushi.
They flew an airplane in California.
The airplane was full of prisoners who escaped.
There was giant snake and the President of the United States.
Don't call me Shirley and Roger were the pilots.
They had to put Roger Moore on a string and swing him into the moving aircraft.
Then he rode the H-Bomb to the ground and saved Fort Knox and all the gold.
Bond is my name and golf is my game.

Oh wait, that's not the right novel...... never mind.

Funny...
The GOOGLE.COM TOS
http://www.google.com/privacy_terms.html
states:

Quote:
You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services.
But then goes on to say...

Quote:
By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.
It then follows up with the next point of :

Quote:
You agree that this license includes a right for Google to make such Content available to other companies, organizations or individuals with whom Google has relationships for the provision of syndicated services, and to use such Content in connection with the provision of those services.
translated, you are granting them permissions to syndicate your stuff....

Oh yeah, and for the definition...
Quote:
use of Google’s products, software, services and web sites (referred to collectively as the “Services”

Yeah, you retain the copyright but effectively agree to grant them free use rights.

a novel written in 1948 discussing the theory of a big brother type gov't watching your every move.

Good book. Was required reading in my Sophomore English class.

While I agree with you that it's Not A Good Thing, Google has a _whole_ lot farther to fall to get down to the MS ethics level. IMHO.

And should be. If more people read it today they might recognize more of what's going on, and understand WHY it is Not A Good Thing. That is the very definition of Big Brother government since that's where the term originated. :) Or at least first became popular.
