Indoor insect biting - 09-13-2008, 03:31 AM

I was wondering if anybody has any experience with getting numerous itching bites indoors and if you found the source. Something keeps biting me all over, especially the underarms, legs, and knee area. I have several on my hands and between my knuckles.

These bites are usually about half the size of a mosquito bite and itch 10x more and very long. I have some bites that have been itching for over a month. I am scratching ALL THE TIME it seems. Some bites are not even visible. This has been going on for about 6 months

There do seem to be some sort of gnats flying around the house

You pretty much need to combat everything if you don't know what it is getting you. First thing would to be to go after fleas if you have pets. Vacuum the carpets and brush in boric acid based carpet powder. Vacuum all your furniture, closet floors, etc. There are some sprays you can put down that are pet and family safe that prevent juvenile insects from breeding. They are not hard to use. The final thing is to cover all dishes and food prep surfaces and bug bomb the residence. It's not too expensive and really helps take care of flying critter problems.

If you're only worried about small flying "gnats", hang a no-pest strip and put a small cup of whiskey in the kitchen window sill. The critters are drawn to the odor of alcohol and fruit creates alcohol when it ferments, so if you regularly keeps bananas on hand, you might stop doing that until you'ver terminated your intruders.

The kind of bites you seem to be talking about could be chigger related if you spend a fair bit of time outdoors in grassy areas.

Hope you are able to stop what's bugging you...

You're a current/recent collegian aren't you? I seem to remember something about Texas Tech. Bedbugs are experiencing a resurgence especially in college dorms. They can travel in bedding, boxes, laundry bags, etc., so they spread from room to room easily. They also go home to mom for the summer. The bites are red and terribly itchy. Infestations are really hard to clear.
