actually, Houston traffic "normally" isn't too bad. Lived here for 21 years, and having also lived in DFW area and San Antonio as well, I can tell you it's a lot better here than there. or there. It's not for the meek, weak or feeble-minded.....or slow.
Live fast or die.
SA: for some bizarre reason the speed limit is taken literally there, any real Texan knows speed limits are merely a suggestion for the lost, disoriented and yankees (folks north of Burleson). And apparently the left lane is preferred by those SA drivers who would never get within 10 mph of the speed limit. Lane is a misnomer, as riding on the lane marker "bumps" seems to be a local sport. ("Better slow down, Homer, sounds like we gotta flat tar...") When I drive to Houston, average speeds increase as I cross the city line. In SA, it slows down. This may be related to the fact that IH10 westbound actually goes (compass) north, creating solar confusion.
DFW: despite having an per-capita overabundance of so-called "highways", most going from nowhere to nowhere (which would be anywhere in the DFW area...), traffic is fairly well gridlocked 24/7 by retirees with purple hair in pink Jaguars. Exceptions are found in the western regions, aka Foat Wuthless, where the purple haired retirees drive pink F350 crewcabs to Minyards.....
As Bill the Cat was wont to say: "thhpppptttt...."
;)
