How to give away a 27 foot cabin cruiser ? DONE DEAL THANKS EVERYONE - 09-23-2008, 05:02 PM

This is a strange question for TPF, but not the strangest I've ever asked.

I have a 27 foot Silverton cabin cruiser. It is currently berthed on Eagle Mtn. Lake near Ft. Worth, Tx. It is a single engine inboard and there is no trailer.
It hasn't left the dock in three years and the engine hasn't started in that much time. When fixed up and running, it is a very nice vessel.

My problem is that the boat club is going to increase rates considerably and I don't want to keep paying when I don't use the boat.

Does anyone have any valuable advice about the companies that offer to come and get your car/boat as a donation to charity ?

EDIT: I've done some homework and Googled , etc. My question is if someone has any EXPERIENCE with any of these entities and specifically about giving them a BOAT. A car would be easy. Come and get it. This boat needs a big trailer and someone who knows how to haul it away.

Dallas Can Academy. Donate cars, boats or planes and it will go towards at risk students' education. Fast and FREE pickup nationwide. A worthy organization.

Here's a direct link to their boat donation page: http://www.texascarsforkids.org/boat_form.asp

The other option is to put it on eBay with no minimum reserve and someone is bound to give you something for it.

If I ask Ike for you, we'll have to charge a consulting fee.

Seriously, the one suggested early seems to be ok but check them out with BBB.

It might get flaky but you can always offer it up on FreeCycle.org here's the Fort Worth division
You can post that they must pick up within x time, and removal is solely up to them.

A friend of mine had a rock yard, she wanted to plant grass so she offered the rocks on freecycle and the new owners came and shoveled all the rocks and took them away.

The two happiest days of a boat owners life:

The day he buys the boat
The day he gets rid of the damn thing

Been there, done that, wasted the money too. If it flies, floats, or fornicates, it's cheaper to rent

Put up an ad at the marina . . . someone will take it off your hands and then you can donate whatever you want to charity. The new tax laws say you can only deduct what the charity actually sells your boat for in the future . . . so, if they sell it for $200, that is all you can deduct (in the old days, you could deduct blue book value).

I donated a Jeep to the Texas CAN Academy. They picked up, and hauled away and sent paperwork very shortly afterwards. I just looked. They take boats too. -G

My wife and I donated her car to Texas CAN Academy as well. It was a fantastic experience. We actually got well over what I anticipated.

As most of these go to auction, you'll get a tax notice of what it sold for and as was previously stated, can deduct the cost of that sale price on your fed taxes.

Hope that helps!
