If the hair washer is a different person than the person doing the cut, etc . . yes I tip them. Just a buck or two though, not much.

Barbers are the same thing, right?

In somewhere like New York City, everyone in any type of service industry expects a tip. Or else!

I had tipped the hair washer and they always looked at me like I was nuts. I was wondering if that was a NY thing.

I never understood the hair washing at a salon thing - why not wash your own hair before you go?
And don't you have to wash your hair afterward also - to get the little pieces of cut hair out that the blow drier misses?

I have only tipped the hairdresser but never the hair washer. I guess everyone is doing different way of putting tips.

No.
This will be an intriguing thread on herd mentality, peer pressure, consumer response, and owner marketing of revenue/expense shifting. And no, I never paid a tip for a shampoo, and rarely paid a tip to either a shampoo craftsman or a professional cutter. But "I'm just a guy!"
Lately, I go exclusively to a "barber". And, yes, I tip my barber, but no one else does.

I always have if it's a separate person from the main stylist. Just a few bucks.

I tip if it's different from the stylist, or include it in my tip, and tell the person who washed my hair that I gave them a tip and to collect it from the stylist.

I've had the same lady cutting my hair for thirty years...At one time I was down and out financially and she wouldn't take a nickle to keep me presentable...Since I recovered, I've always tipped her well...She now charges $14.00 for a haircut...I give her a twenty and don't wait for change...
The hairwasher?...I wash my own hair in the shower every morning...Ben

I don't get my hair washed when I go. I do tip the stylist. I also tip the lady who threads my eyebrows at the mall.

What about the people at Smoothie King? I wonder how much of their income depends on tips.
As a part-time waiter, I now rediculously over-tip when I go to restaurants, even if the service isn't that great, because I know they may have had a crappy night.
But I wonder about little shops like Smoothie King and stuff...Any insight into this?

One of my good friends cuts my hair, so often times I'll pick up some quick groceries for her or buy her and her daughter dinner. Way cheaper than the $60 she charges at her salon!
