Sorry to hear that. But family always comes first. You can always come back to it if need be later. Just remember there are a bunch of us here who you can always come back to if you want to get back into the field. :)

quick question everyone... what do I need to do with my DBA? do I cancel it? can I cancel it? how about the texas resale certificate?

yes, you can cancel it, but why would you ? Just leave it alone.

as far as sales tax. you can declare the business closed. You'll have to get a new number if and when you restart. Or, you can continue to file as you always did, except declare no sales.
