Wichita Mountains NWR Nov. 8-11 - 11-02-2008, 10:34 AM

As it turns out, the 11th is a holiday for my particular governmental entity/employer. So I took Monday off and voila, a 4-day weekend. (not to be confused with my favorite improv group Four Day Weekend)

So we're going to revisit the Wichita Mountains for the first time in several years. On previous trips we slogged through the backcountry with copious amounts of gear and spent the day staring up at someone else's butt. To say the least, we didn't get to appreciate the scenery a lot. So this time we're going to hike all over w/ camera in hand and see what we can see. We might even do an overnighter at Charon Gardens primitive camping area.

I'm officially excited now.

Good for you.
My trip there personified the saying "If it's more than 100 yards from the truck it ain't photogenic"....
I still got some good images. Post what you get and I'll live vicariously through you.

I do a lot of that too, but I'm trying to combine photography and hiking in such a way as to provide a sort of synergy. I enjoy hiking more if I know my pictures will capture the beauty my eyes are seeing, and I enjoy photography more if I know I'm seeing things most people won't. Plus, it makes the photos more unique and hopefully more valuable. And I get out of the house. Win/win.

Our favorite, besides Charons is the hike up Elk Mountain. More of a walk really. Have a great week-end.

That's a nice walk ... found a nice little arch there about 30 feet wide and about 6 feet high.

Find the 40-ft. Hole.

Some of the scenery along that trail is amazing.

This was one of my faves. from a hiking trip up there
