Assistant needed? - 11-02-2008, 02:31 PM

Hi, I am a photography student in the Dallas area and am looking for a freelance photographer whom I can work with as an assistant to get more experience.

What forum should i put this request under? I looked around but wasn't sure which part it should go under.

What kind of photography do you want to do?

I agree with Shane...
you gotta have a "first love" you can do other types of photography, but there has to be one type that really excites you...
Portraits

Corporate

Sports

Weddings

when you decided to go to school for this, what were you planning on doing afterward?

no harm intended Don, I'm just asking questions I wish someone had asked me when I was young and thinking about this...I'd be a lot further along if I had some direction

Thanks for the imput guys! Yes, i realize i should have a little more passion about a specific area of photography. I'll admit, i havent figured that out yet, which is frustrating.

I am going to start posting photos, maybe that will help show what i like to shoot.

Yes, no offense intended. But assisting is a job. There are full time assistants that feed their kids with this job (arrow points at me).

And assisting someone is a lot different than being taught by them. Assistants need to know how to work a lot of different types of equipment and how to conduct themselves in front of clients. I've worked on jobs that have $30,000 a day budgets. I've got to know something about the person I'm working with.

I agree with Don. I think it's a passion for photography that is needed. The need to shoot. Other than that, over my 40+ years of shooting, I started out in high school doing arty shots, then went to commercial, then band promotion, then landscape, catalog, sports and now back to arty again. Each type can teach you things that can be used in the other types. Mainly it's learning to see and anticipate light - learned in whatever specific subcategory of photography you can when you're a student.

I am thinking about bringing on a part-time assistant because I just can't keep up right now with everything. I would also like to have some free time for my kids, which I never get. But, this person would be in charge of doing things like adding to my website, burning dvd's, doing backups, taking care of thank you cards, and the every day behind-the-scenes stuff. I don't really need help with the shooting end of things. I would also like someone that can edit the way that I do to free up some of my time there, as well. Now, since I usually don't NEED someone to help when I'm on shoots, my assistant can definitely come to the shoots and get some images for themselves. Not sure if this is what you are looking for or not. Plus, if you are in school, that means you don't have week days free? Oh, and if anyone else is interested in this, let me know. I don't mind if you eventually want to go off on your own.

Oh, what ashame! Not that it's ashame that you have little ones at home...lol! They are fun! But, that would be great! I do need someone available during the day because that's when I have to go off and shoot a lot, and I don't have time for the other stuff. So, I get even more behind.
