Photo copyright issues and you. - 11-04-2008, 12:52 PM

I have decided to work my next speech around the topic of photo copyright infringement. Would anybody like to share some wild/strange stories that happened to you related to this and allow me to incorporate it into my speech? Perhaps I may schedule a short interview over the net (Since my professor says he loves interviews).

For example, somebody once told me that if they were the person in the photo, then they have the rights to it. I'm definitely throwing this in there, it caught me offguard so much and was amazed somebody would actually think that. Stuff like this.

Also, I will talk about how images are taken and thrown on myspace and facebook everyday, even some with watermarks

You can talk about Canada's crazy law that says whomever owns the camera/film owns the copyright...and how that compares to our system.

Talk about orphan works.

My suggestion would be is to make it clear between selling rights to usage and sellilng the copyright.

Selling usage is like leasing an asset from the owner; selling the copyright is selling the asset itself. If you sell the copyright, then you are no longer the owner and permission is required to print and perform other tasks with the photo.
