Assignment: Pulaski County, Missouri, Courthouse. Election Night 1976:
- Precinct 1 was in the elementary school across the square from the courthouse where we waited for the official filing of the Precinct judges. Poll close at 7. Precinct 1 counted and recounted. All other results come in. No Precinct 1. Midnight. We watched thru the windows as we see the supervisor and poll workers throw their hands up in frustration...another recount! My station if now off the air. I am recalled to the station to let the morning crew get the final story by phone.
- Hotly contested Sheriff's race...The challenger died a few days before the election, but after the ballot cutoff. By law, the deceased remained on the ballot. The incumbent lost!
Another story: roll forward a few years. I'm in line INSIDE the polling place, a large auditorium in Eden Prairie, a former rural outskirt of Minneapolis, then growing suburb. "Owner/Fixture Of The Community" is in line behind me. I recognize him and say, "Hi." His reply, loud enough to be heard across the county, "So, are you voting for Reagan, or 'The Dink'"? Stunned, I smile and quietly say, "Yes, of course!".
Have fun and keep the politics out...
